As much as we wish it wasn’t reality, crime is always around us.  Thankfully I’ve never personally been a victim of a home or car break-in, identity theft or other serious crimes.  I have experienced vandalism to my home though and part of the reason why is because at the time we weren’t as vigilant or proactive as we could have been to prevent it.

As a Member of the Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad, I’ve learned that a lot of crimes can be prevented with basic things we can do ourselves.

September happens to be National Preparedness Month. It’s not something I think about a lot when it comes to being prepared for severe weather, because we’ve been fortunate enough to never have gone through a natural disaster. We’ve been snowed or iced in for a few days, but we’ve never been without power or heat for any length of time.

It’s hard to believe that this happened 13 years ago.

June is both National Safety Month and Home Safety Month.  It’s a wonderful privilege to live in a safe community where you know your neighbors and everyone watches out for each other, but sometimes that very feeling of safety makes us become negligent in keeping our home safe from break ins.  As part of the Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad I want to share a few easy and affordable ways that you make your home less of a target for thieves.  You don’t have to spend a lot to deter a burglar to move on to another home.

We’re in the countdown to graduating our high school senior around here. Just two weeks to go and Amber will be done Part I of her education venture .   With a few months of little responsibility and then back into it full time as she moves onto the university campus in fall to study Arts and Technology with a major in Video Game design.

February is often considered “Love” month because of Valentine’s Day, and while much of it is commercialized it does get us thinking about the ones we love, why we love them and HOW we love them.  It’s not just about getting a greeting card, candy or jewelry, but what we do to protect them as well.

For our family we’ve taken both small and large measures to protect each other.  From installing a monitored alarm system to just making sure that we have enough shelf stable food, water and supplies stocked in case of an emergency. 

It’s been 6 months now since we’ve moved and it’s been quite the learning curve for our family.  We didn’t just move from a small city to a really big one, but we also moved from a condo to a house.  Both those things came with a heightened vigilance on what we need to do to keep our family and home safe and secure.

Looking back on what we did in 2013:

We just bought a new Christmas tree this year, and we were pretty excited to put it up.  We made sure it was UL certified so that we didn’t have to worry about the power cord shorting out and the potential to cause a fire, and we bought one with LED lights so they would stay cool to the touch in case the little hands that are visiting us this year feel the need to get up close and personal with the tree (which I know they will), and won’t burn themselves on them. 

The holidays are quickly approaching (as you can see, I’ve changed my blog header this month to reflect that!) and that means lots of shopping!
