Who is the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF)?

The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.  NBCF programs provide women Help for Today…Hope for Tomorrow.

• Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two major forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. Between 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once.
• In 2004, the total direct cost associated with the treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers was more than $1 billion.
• One in 55 people will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime.
• One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life.

Middleworld has been called a Percy Jackson meets Indiana Jones story.  While I’ve not ever read a Percy Jackson book, this adventure set in the Mayan jungle is somewhat reminiscent of a young Indiana Jones chronicle.

Cancers in the eye (intraocular cancers)

Two types of cancers can be found in the eye.

Primary intraocular cancers are cancers that start inside the eyeball. In adults, melanoma is the most common primary intraocular cancer, followed by primary intraocular lymphoma.

In children, retinoblastoma (a cancer arising from cells in the retina) is the most common primary intraocular cancer, and medulloepithelioma is the next most common (but it is extremely rare). These cancers are discussed in our separate document, Retinoblastoma.

While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. If you have a mother, daughter, sister, or grandmother who had breast cancer, you should have a mammogram five years before the age of their diagnosis, or starting at age 35.

You should have a physical every year. If any unusual symptoms or changes in your breasts occur before your scheduled visit, do not hesitate to see the doctor immediately. (www.nationalbreastcancer.org)

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

During the month of October, Aveda donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each special edition Pink Ribbon Hand Relief™ product to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder and dedicated to funding clinical and genetic research on breast cancer at medical institutions across the globe.

One of the tips that the American Cancer Society gives to help decrease your risk of cancer is to eat healthy.  “Colorful” foods usually have added benefits for your body, and pomegranates are a colorful fruit!  Stacy Kotsakis, Spa Aesthetician says that research confirms that because pomegranates are rich in antioxidants (that include punicalagins, and vitamins B and C), they are a cell regenerator and a skin cancer preventer.

In 2010, approximately 4,030 children younger than age 20 will be diagnosed with primary brain tumors, of which 2,880 will be under age 15.

Brain tumors are the most common of the solid tumors in children, and the leading cause of death from solid tumors. Brain tumors are the second most frequent malignancy of childhood; leukemia is the most common. (from abta.org)

When you read statistics like that, it puts it into perspective of how just a few dollars on each person’s part can help make a difference to fund research, and one way we can all do that is by using our purchasing power to support companies who donate to causes like cancer research.
