Summer has officially taken a back seat to autumn in our part of the country. For us that means storing and/or securing those items that don’t get used in a South Dakota winter. We live in a pretty safe community, so we don’t worry about theft too much, but the items that we need to store outdoors are subject to visibility, as well as the wind. Don’t laugh too much at that last statement, wind has been a bigger concern of loss for us then theft.

With back to school in our rearview mirror, we now have time to think about some home safety maintenance. There are things in our homes that should be checked periodically to keep our families and our homes safe. These are the things we do each fall to help protect our home and family:

We change the batteries in our smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Whether your detectors are “beeping” or not, change those batteries with new ones every year, so you can have peace of mind to know your family is safe.

School supplies, clothes, hair cuts, those are all things we tend to think about when the back-to-school season is upon us. But how about safety? Sometimes that can get lost in the transition of summer fun to classroom, but here are 3 easy ways to keep your tweens/teens safe and help them live secure as fall and school rolls around again.

I know there are days when many of us would like to go back in time.  To the sleepy, little towns where you could leave your doors unlocked, and never lose a bit of peace that someone would come in and loot everything in your home.  I know I’m being a bit idealistic here, but the truth is that in days gone by that’s really how it felt.

Today it doesn’t matter if you live in a city of 100,000, 1 million or 10 million, your home is the target of criminals. 

Who finds it tough to believe it’s already June! I know right?! Where did the first half of this year go? Generally by this time of the year, my family has already been away traveling once or twice. This year though, besides my trip to the Kentucky Derby, life has kept us at home.
