Simple. I like simple. And the G-Drive Slim portable external hard drive, might as well be classified as storage for dummies (no offense meant there, I’m including myself in that sub-group).
The G-Drive by Hitachi is portable, compact and perfect for on-the-go. You can instantly add more storage space to your computer and take large files with you when you travel.
Setup is virtually impossible to screw up. If you have a Mac you simply connect the attached USB cable and you are ready to go.
You have to be a bit more tech savvy for a Windows OS driven computer, which requires you to delete the main partition after plugging it in, re-allocate it then unplug it, plug it back in and then your computer will recognize it and allow you to assign a drive letter to the G-Drive. So now that you know, you’re on your way (I admit to having a bit of help..remember I am in that ‘dummy’ class, but my resident live-in tech support, figured it out and the Hitachi website gives easy to follow instructions with pictures.).
When I got the drive I giggled a bit, because it says it’s ‘Apple Time Machine Ready!’ Not being a Mac owner, I have NO clue what that means. And since China has now banned Time Travel (Google that if you don’t know what I’m talking about!), I’m guessing it’s something entirely different than actually going back in time. Those of you with Macs are likely cheering though, and if you aren’t, I’m guessing you should be.
Since the drive is powered by the USB cable, there is no need for an external power supply. It’s not just easy to use but it’s fast too. You will appreciate the fast data transfer speed with USB 2.0 connectivity and a 5400 RPM hard drive.
The G-Drive Slim doesn’t come with any tools or software, but that’s okay because you don’t need them. It’s simple. Tools and software can just be complicated. We like simple.
And the price is right. You get 320GB for $89.99. In case GBs are a foreign measurement for you you can store about 50,000 2MB photos, 25,000 4MB MP3s or 140 DivX Movies on 100GB. If you’re still confused, 320GB = A lot of space. Add to that a 3 Year Warranty (3 years!! That’s an incredible warranty for a hard drive, hard drives age quicker than dogs), and you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.
Compare the size of this drive with a DVD. It’s pretty small, all that space on a hard drive that can fit in your pocket.
So if you’re looking for an affordable, an almost entirely plug and play drive (it is for the Mac, a little work for Windows but if you can read pictures you’re golden), portable hard drive to back up your desktop, laptop, photos or music – then G-Drive Slim might become your new BFF.
Mother’s Day Ideas
I don’t know about you, but my mom has a computer, and she is (dare I say it in print)…completely unknowledgeable about anything to do with the machine other than getting on the internet. The G-Drive Slim would be the perfect gift for her to backup the precious photos of her grandkids, and when her computer crashes because those same grandkids come over and downloaded a mega virus on it, she’ll still be able to remember when they were cute little angels because her pictures are safe! And those grandkids..they might be your children..so getting her the G-Drive Slim might be in your best interest anyway.
