I write the Switched-On Schoolhouse Series twice a month to share our family’s experience using this software based curriculum in our home.
We’re winding down our posts for the year that we’ve been using Switched-On Schoolhouse software in our home. As our school year is finished (we school year round so we take a longer break at the end of April and begin again at the end of May beginning of June).
Pre-designed curriculum doesn’t always suit everyone’s needs, and, you may choose to develop your own core curriculum to meet the specific needs and goals of your children, but there can be benefits to purchasing parts of your curricula with a commercially produced product like Switched-On Schoolhouse.
We have been using SOS for one core subject (English) and two electives (American Literature and FACS) this past year. And we’ve found that they have actually enhanced the other curriculum we have used as well.

So even though we didn’t use an SOS science course, we were able to ask and answer question in our science course with the story that was taken in the SOS English course.
The SOS curriculum targets the core subjects and electives well, so that after the year of study, they have independently covered a wide range of topics within that course and can use those standards-based lessons and apply them to what is being taught with other books and activities.
