When hearing the name Ryan O’Reilly when it comes to a book being published, if you recognize his name, you may think the book has something to do with business or management. That’s because O’Reilly is the grandson of the O’Reilly Auto Parts founder. To Nourish and Consume is a fiction novel though and a pretty good read.
Named after Shakespeare’s Sonnet 73, To Nourish and Consume by Ryan O’Reilly deals with the awkward journey of returning home after a long period of avoiding one’s past. the notion of returning home is something many long for, but in the end is unreachable.
To Nourish and Consume is the story of three former friends, who reunite unexpectedly in the small resort town they had known as children. For the main character, Brian Falk, coming home brings him face-to-face with a past he spent most of his adult life running from, especially his teenage involvement in a complicated relationship. Brian hoped to return not just to home, but also to the euphoric experiences of youth; only to find that youth, being transient is gone forever. His eventual self-discovery comes in the form of breaking certain ties to the past, while at the same time recognizing the role his past has played in sculpting his current life.
There was much in this novel I could relate to. A first love that ends in heartbreak. Friendships lost between time and space. Ryan O’Reilly has a way with words. So much so that many times I felt immersed in the page entirely losing myself in the surroundings he described. I think everyone knows a ‘Brian’ or perhaps is a ‘Brian’ – and so the story turns into a reflection of a past you remember almost as your own.
I enjoyed the basic story of the book and the writing was so well done. As I often mention in my reviews there is mature content in this book so if that’s something you tend to shy away from you might not find it to your taste. That’s the only issue I had with it.
You can buy this title on Amazon, and through other booksellers.
