The story of The Borrowers has been told over and over again, in many different forms, and it’s time for another one to be introduced to your family. The Secret World of Arrietty (released May 22, 2012), available on Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack. is a movie from Studio Ghibli (famous for Spirited Away and Ponyo) and Disney that tells another story of the mysterious Little People who ‘borrow’ supplies from the houses they hide beneath. It features the voices of Bridgit Mendler, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett.

Arrietty is a fourteen-year-old Borrower who lives with her mother and her father underneath a human house, unknown to the owner and the housekeeper. However, when Shawn, a young boy who came to the house because of his need for quality rest and care, catches a glimpse of Arrietty in the gardens, it could jeopardize the young Borrower’s life. Their secret friendship will teach them both lessons they need to learn, and lead to an adventure they’ll never forget.

The screenplay was done by Hayao Miyazaki who is one of the most influential and admired filmmakers working in animation today and is a major figure in the Japanese cinematic landscape. The Secret World of Arrietty is a beautiful example of Japanese animation, with creative character designs and stunning backgrounds. The story and its characters are touching and easy to connect with, leaving you with a wonderful movie experience. It’s a delightful family movie, and I know it will get viewed often in our home. I can recommend this movie to anyone!

The Bonus Features include the entire movie’s storyboards (which is an interesting way to view the movie, especially for budding artists), 15+ minutes of the original Japanese trailers and TV spots, plus a couple of music videos.
