Regular Three Different Directions readers, know that I love books. I read all kinds of genres, and enjoy them all for different reasons. Last week a most charming book arrived on my doorstep, one that would make a fabulous gift, National Geographic’s ‘The Classic Treasury of Childhood Wonders: Favorite adventures, stories, poems, and songs for making lasting memories’ by Susan H. Magsamen.
This book is a mix of classic and modern, including poetry by great writers like Robert Louis Stevenson, William Shakespeare, English Counting Rhymes, and Folk Songs, alongside activities that tell kids to get out their iPods to create some music in their kitchen, and making themselves into a superhero.
The illustrations on the pages are fantastic and whimsical. It’s almost as if the young children pictured playing on the pages are about to leap off, and you can almost hear their whispered singing of the familiar nursery rhymes, peppered throughout the book.
The book is divided into five sections that illuminate a child’s world and interests — Magic and Make-Believe; Outdoor Exploring; Crafts and Construction; Yummy for the Tummy; and Bedtime, Bathtime, and Dreamtime.
I originally thought when I accepted to be a part of this book blog opportunity, that I would review the book, and then pass it on to my sister who has two little boys. But I’ve since changed my mind, and want this interesting volume to stay on my shelves, and hopefully be able to share it with any grandchildren I might have one day.
The Classic Treasury of Childhood Wonders is available at Amazon.com and other booksellers for a retail price of $19.95.
