A couple of weeks ago I received a set of DVDs to review from Rock ‘N Learn. Phonics Volumes 1 & 2. With these DVDs children learn the rules of phonics and word families by engaging in the songs presented by the animated rock band on the DVD.
Putting rules and sounds to song and rhyme is a good way for students to practice and retain these building blocks of reading. that is actually how Amber learned to read in her Kindergarten class. The program they used wasn’t nearly as hip, catchy or as animated as Rock ‘N Learn though!
The music is upbeat and the visual of a close up mouth allows beginners the chance to practice the formation of sounds. There is a segment of the DVD for children to practice reading also using an on screen story, which is good for the intermediate students.
Read the testimonials from a couple of people about what they think of Rock ‘N Learn Phonics.
“Thank you so very much for producing the video entitled Phonics Rock ‘N Learn. This video has helped my son tremendously with his reading skills. It has made learning words fun, especially with the music that he can easily remember.” –Rebecca T.
“When it comes to comprehensive, affordable, and highly entertaining phonics programs, the clear choice is Rock ’N Learn Phonics.” –Learning Imagination
The combination of animation, graphic backgrounds and music keeps the child’s focus and gives them an image and sound in their head if they hit a challenge in their reading and need to think of a phonics rule. In both DVDs they build first on simple rules and then when the child is comfortable and confident with those skills, they can work on the rules that are more complex.
This is a great teaching supplement to the work your child is already doing in school, or if you homeschool as a part of your reading and writing curriculum.
