GS Preschool Games – Android App

My nephews are busy boys, so when they were here visiting I made sure I had lots of things for them to do to keep them occupied.  Like most boys ages 4-7 they are interested in video games.  I always have an ulterior motive when I download games for them to play on my tablet or phone and it’s usually that this auntie makes sure that the games are educational.  While they were visiting I downloaded GS Preschool Games from the Google Play store for review.

First of all GS Preschool Games is free.  That’s always a bonus for me, especially since I keep these apps on my devices to entertain other people’s children.  With out a doubt apps like this are great to have for caregivers like me that do not have young children ourselves, but occasionally find a need for them

I was pretty impressed with how many activities are included in the app.  Kids will find jigsaw puzzles, mazes, matching, memory games, counting, comparison activities and more in this app.

GS Preschool Games is a landscaped mode app.  The child can start off with pressing the play button on the entering screen and they’ll be given random games to play.  Or they can scroll the screen and pick any one of the activities to play.

The narration is clear and the volume of the voices is loud enough to understand even on a low volume level.  There is music in the background but it doesn’t overwhelm the speaking and isn’t very loud to become annoying either.  You can mute the app, however if your child isn’t familiar with the games yet and cannot read, you’ll have to tell them what to do for each activity in that case.

After the child completes the task successfully they’ll be able to choose a sticker.  They’re also given a star rating and statistics on how quickly they completed the game.  A helpful indicator for parents to gauge comprehension and skills, but I’m not sure it’s necessary for the young ones themselves.

The offset to a free app is the fact that the developers need to make an income for it somehow.  That generally comes in the form of ads.  The ads show up when the activity is finished and the star screen pops up.  Unfortunately there are ads on both the top and the bottom of the screen in this app.  And the top one (at least on my HTC One phone) covers up a portion of the reward box.  Although I do have to say, the little fingers did not accidently open an ad when trying to close out the box (which I’ll admit surprised me).  I think I’d like a choice of being able to pay a small fee to have the app ad free, especially if the app is going to be used with a child who touches everything that pops up!

It was a fun app to play though, and the learning curve for the preschoolers is not overly hard.  Some of the activities were easy and just cool to do, like the Scratch Painting.

While others were a bit more challenging, Burst the Balloons and the Mazes, so it’s an app that can span a few years of ages and provide enough of a variety to keep the little ones engaged for awhile.

You can also find GS Preschool Games as an iOS app to download for your Apple devices.
