Fun Road Trip Memories

Road Trips.  Love them or hate them they sure do evoke a lot of memories!

We were the first of our family to move away, so it’s always a road trip to go back home.  8 hours of driving through South and North Dakota up into Canada.  There really isn’t a lot to see in winter, but in summer the golden fields of crops sure are beautiful.

One of my favorite road trips though was one where we drove out west to the complete opposite side of South Dakota with my brother and his family to see the sites.

We drove out from our home here in Eastern South Dakota, and stopped in Murdo (home of Senator John Thune) and visited an old car museum that they have there.  It’s a pretty neat place to stop, and we even saw a ‘horse drawn hearse’!

We headed out west on through the Badlands along the Needles Highway.  Wow there are quite the twisty roads, they are really narrow too.  So much that sometimes only one car can get through.  Unfortunately this was just about the time that our daughter decided to get sick on us.  This was before we found the magic of Dramamine.

From there we got to our hotel in Hills, SD.  The next couple of days were full of sight seeing.

We took in the Mammoth Center.  That was really neat.  A whole dig site preserved inside a building.

We also went to an old mine where lots of work went in, but no gold was ever found. The highlight of that tour was the ‘potty’ car that they included at the end of the ore cars so that the miners could relieve themselves!

Of course Mt. Rushmore was one of our stops as well as the Crazy Horse Monument.  We actually went to Crazy Horse on the day where the granddaughter of the designer of Mt. Rushmore was having her wedding there.  To say that it was crowded is an understatement.  It also happened to be Native American Day (Columbus Day), so they were offering free admission!

We also went to the caves in the area.  What incredible natural wonders those are!

We ended the few days we spent out west with a day in Rapid City, where the older kids found a place to go Go-Karting, and I found the local mall!  Good times, fun memories!
