Skin cancer is one of the only cancers that experts say you can prevent. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation about 86% of melanoma cases are due to UV Rays. You may need to take your sun protection up a notch though to control sun exposure. Here are some ways that you can help prevent skin cancer:
1. SUNSCREEN IS A MUST
Hot or cold, UV rays are always there, so make sure you use sunscreen year round on exposed skin.
2. USE UVA/UVB SUNSCREEN
Okay, now that you are using sunscreen, all the time, make sure you are using one that is at least 30 SPF and that says “broad spectrum protection” or “UVA/UVB” on the label. That means the sunscreen will protect against both skin damaging and burning rays.
3. PROTECT YOUR EYES
Get a pair of UV Protection Sunglasses, the bigger the better so they will also guard the skin around your eyes. The shades will also reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
4. WEAR SUN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Opt for darker clothing, with a tight weave to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Choose clothing made with UPF fabric for the best protection. The clothing should have UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) listed in its description, or on the tag or label. One brand to check out for a variety of stylish options is Coolibar.
5. DO SELF EXAMS
Check your skin monthly for any changes in moles or spots, and look for new ones you haven’t seen before. If you notice anything irregular be sure to make an appointment with your physician or dermatologist to have them look it over and take a biopsy if needed.
