There’s something about men in red uniforms, especially if the uniforms include funny black hats. Beefeaters and Mounties have both, and tourists around the world are just itching to meet them. Beefeaters (in the UK) are known for their frozen posture and immutable facial expressions, but mounties have horses, so it’s pretty clear who wins the battle of the best. Plus, mounties will actually talk back, so book yourself a flight to Canada and go say hi.

To see if they’re as friendly as they seem

It is said that Canadians are the most polite people in the world. If you’re in doubt, just look at any Twitter ‘beef’ between Canadians. It’s surreally civil. Still, if you’re visiting a strange land, it helps if the people are nice to you, especially if you’re lost and you need directions. They also have a rich architectural history from the Montreal Steps to the architectural museum. Find a friendly face, make a new friend, and go see some pretty buildings.

Justin Bieber doesn’t spend much time in Canada these days, and Prime Minister Trudeau has a pretty busy itinerary (and a polite but lethal security team), so you’re probably not going to meet either of them while you’re visiting. It’s equally unlikely you’ll spot Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, or the guy who plays Jack Bauer. Still, you might get a chance to eat at their favorite restaurants, or hang out at places that are important to them. It could happen…

Canada has gorgeous landscapes, so the roadside views will take your breath away, and it’s a great chance to see fun things and experience the French and English sides of the country.
