The Club No One Wanted to Join (Book Giveaway)

Nearly two years ago, thousands of people woke up not realizing that they would be getting a phone call that day that would literally change their lives.  Imagine picking up the phone to hear, that all the money that you had invested, for some over 20 years, was gone.

That was reality for the investors that had money in Madoff Securities. While the media concentrated on it for a while, many people were left with just the shirts on their back (literally).  Now some of those who have lost everything materially are sharing with you how life goes on after an event like that.

The stories are unbelievable, not in the fact that a life time of savings was wiped out overnight, but because these weren’t naïve or stupid people.  They did their fact checking, they were cautious and they trusted that the government had their backs if something went wrong.  And something went wrong…big time.

This book of stories was compiled by Alexandra Roth, a victim of the Madoff Ponzi scheme.  Recognizing that the average investor in Madoff’s securities wasn’t a rich, well to do person, but a middle-class John & Sally Doe; she wanted the bigger picture portrayed of who exactly it was that Madoff ripped off, and now who the government is delaying to help.

If you think this can never happen to you, read this book, you’ll think again.

What’s most interesting about this book however, is most of the victims don’t see themselves as that any longer, they see themselves as survivors.  They realize that while money is helpful to live a comfortable life, and do extraordinary things, that isn’t what makes you happy.  Most of them, while not in their initial plans, have gone back to work to scrape together a living, and revel in the joys that their family and friends bring them.  And through their darkest days, realized the true friendships and caring of those around them.
