Switched-On Schoolhouse Series: Free Placement Tests

I write the Switched-On Schoolhouse Series twice a month to share our family’s experience using this software based curriculum in our home.

Maybe you’re ready to switch curriculum in your homeschool, or perhaps you are bringing your children home to school them after they’ve been in a traditional classroom setting.  If either of these describe your situation, you may wonder what grade level or type of course to purchase for your children.

Switched-On Schoolhouse provides free placement tests for all five subject areas that can be accessed simply by completing and submitting an online form.  Alternatively you can also purchase a CD-ROM ($19.95) that contains tests for grades 3-12 in the core subjects of Bible, language arts, math, history and geography, and science.

These assessments measure student mastery of basic skills and knowledge in those subjects that all students should know.  By taking these test you can eliminate learning gaps and make sure that your children are not missing critical skills or that you are not being redundant and teaching them things they are already proficient at. 

After taking the assessments, should you decide to purchase the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum, the beauty of the program is that you can skip or block assignments that your students are already well-prepared in and then concentrate on the new concepts or the ones that need more work.

Update on November 17, 2011

It was brought to my attention earlier today via a comment from a reader that Alpha and Omega publishing no longer offers free placement tests for the Switched-On Schoolhouse Software, the online form apparently is no longer available to do that.  They still offer the CD-ROM for purchase if one would like to know what grade level to place their student.

Alpha and Omega still offers free placement test resources for their Monarch, LIFEPAC, and Horizons Curriculum.
