Switched-On Schoolhouse: After a Year

var fbShare = {size: ‘small’,}

I write the Switched-On Schoolhouse Series twice a month to share our family’s experience using this software based curriculum in our home.

Well here it is, a year has gone by since I made my first post introducing the Switched-On Schoolhouse software curriculum to you all. I went through all my past posts to make a final list of what we liked most about the software.

1. I really liked that it was easy to install. No need to be a tech genius to get the curriculum up and running for your students.

2. I LOVE the automatic grading. It significantly cut down on the time that I needed to spend as a parent on paperwork.

3. I like that each student has their own account, and can personalize the dashboard the way they want. Making logging on to school each day a personal experience.

4. We appreciated having books that were in the public domain accessible through the software to read as a .pdf.

5. I have never seen a FACS curriculum as in depth as Switched-On Schoolhouse’s. They cover SO much more than cooking and sewing. Finances, relationships and childcare are all in it too.

6. I like that we can take it with us when we travel. The hours in the car or airport can be used to do schoolwork.

Of course we also liked that you could change your calendar and due dates, and block assignments on the fly.

Really we only had one factor that caused frustration and that was with short answer questions. For many of those they look for very specific wording, so when the student puts something in the space that isn’t worded just the way the software is programmed to look at it, then it gets marked incorrect. That gets the student frustrated and that means the teacher needs to go in and look through all the answers to mark it correct.

Will we use Switched-On Schoolhouse again? I think so. I am most impressed by their variety of electives they have for high school. Which is what I’m leaning on using for the rest Amber’s elective courses.

Thanks for sticking it out with me this year as we explored Switched-On Schoolhouse. I was glad I could share my thoughts with you!
