This week has been a test on my patience and grace.  After finally calming down from the stress of our nightmarish home closing and the realization that the home needs more work than we were led to believe (which I’m sure will be another blog post in the future), now we were stalking the mailbox for notification that our daughter was a National Merit Semi-Finalist….with no notification being delivered.

It pained me to be “that mother,” but when 4 years of college tuition are at stake, sometimes you just have to be.  Thankfully in between e-mails and phone calls, I picked up the NIV College Devotional Bible I received for review (kind of fitting huh?) and perused it through the day.

When you’re Christian parent who has tried diligently to raise up your child in the path of faith, one of the scariest things is cutting those apron strings and sending them off to college.  Sure we pray (and will continue to) that the things she’s learned from us, from the Bible, from the church and her spiritual mentors will ‘stick’, but arming them with as much as you can for accountability before they cross the dorm threshold is prudent too.

So we plan to send Amber off to college next fall with the NIV College Devotional Bible.  Within the pages of Scripture are 222 devotions that will help students embrace adversity, think spiritually and define who they are as a child of God within and beyond the classroom walls.

Each devotion sums up the Bible passage, has verses to be read, gives a human perspective, contains a real person’s story and closes out with three thoughtful questions.

Additionally the devotions can be read chronologically or they can be looked up by subject matter.  There are also different systems of reading plans included in rear of the Bible.

As I reflected on a number of the devotions I read for the review, I realized that they actually aren’t very ‘collegiate’ in nature.  By that I mean, although they will certainly help the college student to remain and grow in their faith, they are actually thought provoking and convicting for people of any age.

Case in point, I believe that before I made my final phone call to resolve the “missing” scholarship notification much of what I had read from the devotions and their supporting Scripture verses had me much calmer and more gracious than I would have been had I called and not spent time reading them.

I realize that graduation is still off a good many months on the horizon for high school seniors this school year.  But this Bible is a good resource to keep in mind as a Christmas or Graduation gift, whether the student will be living at home or in a dorm, whether they attend a Christian college or secular university.

  1. I agree Theresa. I have a couple nephews graduating in 2014 and this would be perfect! Thank you Tammy for the review!

  2. You have raised your daughter well and I am sure her devotions will go with her to college. This bible will help her to keep them a priority when new experiences come her way.

  3. This seems like a wonderful and uplifting resource. I think you are a great mom that wants the best for her child. I attended a 4 year church university and it was the best choice I could have made when it came to my education. I had such a positive experience.

  4. I'll have to pick one of these up for my nephew who is a new college student. He could use the encouragement right now.

  5. What a fabulous looking bible. I think this would make an excellent book for any student/parent.
