The Butterfly Attack – Episode 1 is the first installment of an interactive graphic novel that is part of the larger Netwars: Out of CTRL, focusing on the possibilities and current realities of cyber warfare.
Written by award-winning British novelist and screenplay writer M. Sean Coleman and created by the German production company Filmtank, The Butterfly Attack presents this to us with the story of Max Parsons, a member of a group of hackers who have created a software to use in defense against cyber attacks.
The first episode details the simulation set up to test this software, while also setting up the villains of the graphic novel’s world – the Black Flag. I don’t want to say much else to avoid spoilers, because the story is really good, so I’ll just say the mock cyberwar game that the hackers are hired to conduct goes terribly wrong. You’ll have to find out how and why in the app yourself!
The interactive format of The Butterfly Attack – Episode 1 allows for scene-setting music, a well paced flow for the story, and the opportunity to put in small, world-building details without the need for footnotes or out of place panels.
I enjoyed going through the story, reading all the hidden notes and finding all the interactive features.
Additional features of The Butterfly Attack graphic novel app include:
– Unique animations and sound effects
– Intuitive controls
– Revolutionary 3D parallax technology with motion sensors for unlocking hidden artifacts
– Available in multiple languages including English, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese

I’d recommend the Netwars: Butterfly Attack app for late teens and up – the story seems promising, and it looks like something to keep an eye on for future episodes! The app is available for iOS, Android, Amazon and Samsung. Its cost is $2.99.
Episodes two and three of The Butterfly Attack are scheduled to release later this summer.

Interactive graphic novel apps were tricky for me at first, but once I got the hang of it, I enjoyed the apps so far.
I'll bet my son would really appreciate this. I'm going to tell him about it and see what he thinks. I was playing games with him when I visited and it was awesome.
This is a pretty cool app for older kids. I think they would love how much technology comes to play in it.
The Butterfly Attack looks pretty cool. I'll have to check it out.
I don't think I have ever used an app like this before. Bet my children would love it though.
