“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life!” – Mike Wazowski

Now available in stores, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY on Blu-ray DVD and 3D Blu-ray DVD is the Pixar ‘prequel/sequel’ to Monsters, Inc.

We took the opportunity to see it this summer in the theaters, but now with our daughter right in the middle of university applications, essays and paperwork; it was a lot of fun to watch it again at home.  It’s scarerific, especially in 3D.

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer – and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU).  But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.  The pair’s out -of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program.  To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters if they ever hope to make things right.  “Monsters University” bravely explores themes of self-discovery and the revelations that come with growing up.

You can’t help but love all the wacky monsters in this movie (even the ‘scary’ ones!).

I feel like I repeat myself a lot when I do Disney and/or Pixar DVD reviews because I tend to say the same things, like; the visuals are stunning and the sound score coming out of your speakers is incredible.  But it’s true of almost all of their movies, and this one is no exception.  Add to that a feel good story line and you have yourself a winning movie for young and old alike.

The 3D effects on the disc are awesome.  The colors are exceptional and their was no ghosting at all that we could detect.  The most fun of all to watch in 3D were the ‘Scare Games’ themselves, between the action and the audio soundtrack at that point, you literally feel like your on the sidelines watching it live.

The highlight for me on the Disney Blu-ray DVDs if we’ve already seen a movie on the big screen are the Bonus Features.  Amber is going to university to study Arts & Technology and Pixar is actually a place where some of the graduates would be able to get jobs with the degree she will acquire.  One of the things she’s fascinated with is Color and Light; so that’s the first bonus feature we explored.  It explains how a single painting can set the tone for an entire scene, the creation of the colorscripts and how they were realized technically in the final film.  Along with the process, this feature explores the many layers of technical innovation required to produce such a naturalistic feel.

Other features include: Campus Life, Story School, Scare Games (check out the MU production teams as they go head to head in the mostly playful Pixar Scare Games competitions), Welcome to MU, Music Appreciation, Scare Tactics, Paths to Pixar – MU Edition (Members of the MU crew tell their own compelling backstories and share the challenges they overcame along their paths to PIxar – This was a great feature to watch with our daughter for encouragement for her road ahead!), Furry Monsters: A Technical Retrospective, Deleted Scenes, “The Blue Umbrella”, Audio Commentary, Promo Picks, College Campaign, Theatrical Campaign, Set Flythroughs, Art Gallery and more!  So you can see you’ll need some extra time to go through all the bonus material included on the Blu-ray DVD!

Here’s a peek at one of the deleted scenes.

This is definitely a DVD set that will get you an A as a gift giver if you get it for someone this holiday season.  And don’t forget to watch past the credits, Disney/Pixar always has something waiting for you 😉

  1. I loved this movie, I thought it was really cute. I then learned more about how much thought they put into the details and it made the movie that more enjoyable!!
