As a Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad Ambassador, I have received compensation and products for my family to use in my home for our safety and security. Any opinions I share in posts related to the Live Security Squad and Master Lock are my own.

Earlier this month as part of the Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad, I shared with you some bike safety tips.  I’m keeping on that theme, with a review of one of their products that will help to keep your bike secure: 8170D Steel U-Lock.

Did you know that 47.6% of people have either had their bike stolen or know someone that has had their bike stolen?  Or that 32.5% of people do not lock up their bike at all when they’re on the go?  According to BicycleLaw.com, most stolen bikes are targeted for one simple reason—they were left unlocked and unattended.

If a bicycle is an important mode of transportation for you or your tween/teen then you’ll want to keep it secure.  A quality lock to achieve that goal with is Master Lock’s 8170D Steel U-Lock.  It has a vinyl coating on it which means that it will stand up to outside elements and help to prevent scratches.

This u-lock is a keyed lock, that comes with 2 keys and a carrier bracket to attach to your bike.

As soon as you pick it up you can tell from its heft, that it’s going to be a tough lock to break through for any thief, because it has a hardened steel body that resists cutting, sawing and prying.  The keying mechanism is a disc key which provides superior pick resistance.

The 8170D Steel U-Lock comes with a carrier bracket as well and all the hardware you need to install it.

Since we’re in the process of moving, we recently donated our bikes to a charity organization, so I borrowed a friend’s bike to try the lock out on, and thus we didn’t install the carrier bracket, but the packaging gives great directions on how to do that, along with some different ways that you can attach it to your bike’s frame.

The lock is very affordable at just $15.81 on the Master Lock website.  I think that’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind that your bike is less likely to get stolen because of a lock that’s difficult to breach.

Because of the weight and the fact that the lock is secured with a key, makes it most suitable for tweens/teens and adults to use.  Whether your bicycle is your primary mode of transportation or it’s used for leisure activities, locking it up with a quality product is the smart thing to do.
