There’s no wonder why Lincoln won two Oscars®, a Golden Globe®, a Bafta, and AFI “Movie of the Year.” The acting and production in this movie are superb and it’s a must see motion picture for everyone.
Inspired by the true-life events confronting Abraham Lincoln and his monumental moral and political challenge to amend the United States Constitution to permanently abolish slaver, “Lincoln” is a rich and compelling historical human drama.
We originally saw the movie in theaters because when it was released our daughter had just finished taking the Civil War period in her junior year American History course. When the Blu-ray DVD I received for review came in the mail we happened to have company over just a few days later. Generally when these friends come over we play board games, but we asked them if they would like to watch “Lincoln” instead and they were eager to do so because they had wanted to see it but didn’t get a chance to watch it in theaters.
Because we were now seeing it for the second time around, I paid more attention to the production aspect of the movie then to the story itself. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Lincoln’s role amazingly and he completely deserved the Oscar he won for that role, however, Sally Field did an excellent job playing the First Lady as well. I was struck more so watching it this time on how she portrayed the feelings and emotions that Mary Lincoln must have had in that time of her life.
The attention to detail that Steven Spielberg brings throughout the film brings an intenseness to the movie that otherwise might not have been. A particular scene of Lincoln laying down on the floor next to his young son and then carrying him on his back out of the room, but leaving his slippers behind, personalizes Lincoln as not just as a political figure but as a person and a father.
If you are a teacher, home educator or just a parent that likes to supplement education at home – this is definitely a movie worth picking up and watching with your Middle School and High School children.
