It’s just January and I’m already thinking to the end of spring. Partly the weather has something to do with it (it’s just been so un-winter here this year), but it’s also because of graduations. We know a number of people graduating from all sorts of educational institutions and of course that means parties and some gift giving as well.
Where we live it is customary for parents to hold an open house when their children graduate. It’s kind of a nice way to catch up with people that you may have not seen in a while, family, friends and neighbors. As a tribute to the graduate you at the least bring a card, and while it’s not an obligation to give a gift, I always sort of feel I should come with something.
What I give is largely dependent on what kind of education the graduate is finishing and the role they play in our lives. For acquaintances and casual friends we’ve usually given a gift card with a small denomination on it. For close friends and family we’ve tended to go a bit further. A personalized gift that they will need for a career path usually is what we opt for.
We don’t often get the chance to attend a graduation for a college or university diploma, but we have one of those coming up in the next couple of years. I’ve been tossing around the idea of pooling with a couple of families we know and getting the upcoming graduate something a little bit more expensive. One item I think would make a nice gift would be a wrist watch. I think it’s kind of ‘old school’ (pun intended!) and despite the rise of smart phones and tablets, I also think that in a corporate workplace a classy watch makes an impression.
I looked at some Seiko watches online, and because they come in all sizes, shapes and styles, I think I could find one that would suit the graduate’s tastes. The back could be engraved with the graduation date to make it not just functional but sentimental as well.
What do you think? Yay or nay on a wrist watch for a graduation gift?
