If you are a Tim Burton fan, I suspect you have already seen this movie in the theater. But if cost or time prevented you from viewing it in October when it was released, I’m pretty sure you’re going to want to add this to your DVD collection.

Frankenweenie is a 3D stop-motion animated movie and will have you laughing (and at times flinching a bit!) because of the unique characters and the unusual storyline.

Our favorite character was without a doubt Mr. Rzykruski, the new science teacher, who ultimately sends Victor on the road to reanimating his beloved dog Sparky. The experiment works…but when classmate Edgar ‘E’ Gore happens to see Sparky – he has an idea for the Science Fair. He just can’t keep the secret to himself though, and that’s where the mayhem begins from cats turned to bats and a pool full of sea monkeys, the community of New Holland learns in the end what loyalty and friendship are really made of.

I wouldn’t encourage children to try Victor’s or his classmates experiments at home (!) – but we are pleased to share a 19-page science activity guide! The Frankenweenie Activity Guide introduces children to a series of three lesson adventures designed to help them step into Victor’s shoes as a scientist. These electrifying explorations are aligned to National Science Education Standards and integrate hands-on experiments.

So go on and take an electrifying adventure with your kids. Watch the movie and then do these activities. No pets (dead or otherwise) necessary!

The effect of the movie being entirely in black and white definitely adds to the unique production of it, and if you have the opportunity to see the DVD in 3D that effect is just heightened by the lack of color. I know I often say in these 3D reviews that the effects are great – but truly in Frankenweenie the 3D is outstanding.

The 4-Disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD & Digital Copy) has some great bonus features. There’s the new original short “Captain Sparky vs The Flying Saucers”, an behind the scenes feature with Tim Burton, a look at the film’s touring exhibit and the live-action short ‘Frankenweenie’ which Tim Burton made many years ago when a stop-motion film just wasn’t to be then.

“Frankenweenie” features an all star cast including the voices of Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder. The DVD in a variety of purchase options is available in stores and online today!
