Gibraltar is a British overseas territory perched on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It’s geological features are stunning and it is filled with unspoiled natural beauty.
At Gibraltar is the narrow neck that separates Europe from Africa, and the only place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. The left body of water is the Atlantic, the right is the Mediterranean, and in the middle, yeah, that’s an airport runway!
The Rock of Gibraltar, which is one of the Pillars of Hercules is the most recognizable feature to most (you know the Prudential Insurance ad? That’s the Rock of Gibraltar!).
In Gibraltar we toured the Gibraltar Museum, which was built on the site of 14th century Moorish baths, but unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take any pictures.
We took a ride up to the top of the Rock in a cable car.
Most of the upper portion of the region encompasses a nature reserve which provides sanctuary and protection for 230 native Barbary Macaques, the only wild monkeys found in Europe.
These guys are literally everywhere, and you can get right up next to them, you just have to make sure you don’t have food in your pockets or an open bag, or they’ll get snatched right away from you! Here’s a short video I took of the ones that were hanging around our tour bus.
