A couple of years ago we needed to invest in a new TV (okay needed is sort of an over the top word for a TV, no one NEEDS a TV, but you get what I mean…). My husband always on the forefront of technology decided we should get a 3D one. Back then it was quite a risky thing to do because no one really knew if this ‘at home 3D thing’ would take off, you could hardly even buy any movies for it then. Although we paid quite a bit up front for it, over the past few years it has actually saved us a lot of money because we rarely go to the movie theater anymore. We’ll only go for “epic” movies that we just can’t wait for to come to DVD or if we have a gift card, otherwise we can buy a movie (even in 3D!) for a fraction of the price that it costs all of us to go the movies.
That being said, last May on a date night we went to see The Avengers. In the theater. Gasp. But for all the money I hate spending at the movies, I have to admit, it was worth every last penny. Interestingly enough though, we had not seen any of the pre-quel movies that lead into it. And so in anticipation of the September 25th Blu-Ray/DVD Release of The Avengers, we bought Thor, Captain America and Iron Man 2, just so we’d finally be in the “know” about the events that preceded The Avengers.
We watched our DVDs of Thor and Captain America, but had not yet had the chance to sit down altogether to watch Iron Man 2…
when I had the opportunity to head to Walmart with The Avengers Augmented Reality App (available for iOS and Android) to do some shopping to have a #MarvelAvengersWMT themed Family Fun Night at home – we decided the main feature would be Iron Man 2 and we’d plan a whole The Avengers fun evening around watching it.
If you have never used an augmented reality app…oh my…it is so much fun. My daughter (who dislikes shopping. a. lot.) had a blast in Walmart using this to find out what The Avengers Superhero she is most like. (Ends up it’s Iron Man…no surprise there!) So before we left to shop we downloaded the app onto our iPod Touch.
The app gives you a good idea of what you’re looking for to find the trigger points. The mission is to complete a quiz in 3 parts each containing 3 questions. There are specific signs in areas of the store (Halloween merchandise, clothing, toys, electronics, deli pizza case), where you can scan a symbol and the questions will then come on to the app. The symbol gets all 3D like on your app and ‘pops’ out at you – it’s very neat.
So we needed some extra things for our The Avengers themed family fun night besides what we already had at home, and this is what we ended up purchasing:
A The Avengers Fleece Blanket for this momma to cuddle up with while watching the movie (available in the home goods department)
A Captain America Lego Kit for Daddy and Daughter to put together (in the toy department) – although Daddy did not get a chance to help…
A Captain America T-shirt for our daughter (in the mens clothing department) We were a little disappointed that there was no branded The Avengers clothing in the girls or juniors department. I mean girls like Superheroes too!
Cups, Plates and Napkins (in the party supplies)
And to eat:
Marketside Five Cheese Pizza (near the deli in a refrigerated case) sporting Iron Man on the box. These boxes are so cool ….if you hover your device with Marvel The Avengers Augmented Reality App on top you get a 3D city scape from the movie to view!
Kool-Aid Wild Watermelon Kiwi ScienTwist Drink for ‘Hulk Juice’
Cheese and Pretzel Rods to create edible Mjolnir Hammers
Cupcake Icing in Red, White and Blue to decorate cupcakes to look like Captain America’s Shield
and The Avengers Fruit Snacks for movie snacking.
Okay seriously there was SO much more we could have bought, but I didn’t want to go overboard. Check out all the items we saw and the fun we had with the augmented reality app in our Google + story by clicking the photo below.
The Augmented Reality App also has a feature where you can use it on the DVD display at Walmart and have your picture taken with the characters from the movie. The display wasn’t out at our Walmart when we went shopping, but I’m going to go back and check it out.
An Exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD/Novel Combo Pack at Walmart of the movie will be sold for $24.95 which will include this The Avengers Graphic Novel.
It’s super – the colors and drawings are great and since it’s not available for sale, could really be a collector’s item one day.
Oh yeah and The Avenger I’m most like, would be Thor.
Don’t laugh, I want to see your picture when you finish the quiz….;)

Thank you so much for sharing your family's Marvelous enthusiasm for The Avengers and the fun you created! What a fantastic blanket! My son would love one, I have no doubt! I didn't snicker even one little bit at your Super Hero pic ๐ I love your hammer!!
You guys have everything you could possibly need to make it an event! I loved The Avengers too, but I HATED the Captain America movie. I thought it was so boring!
Your Mjolnir Hammers are awesome! What a clever idea!
@Terri – we had too much fun we can't wait to buy and watch the 3D movie on Tuesday!
@Liz – Captain America was a little long but I liked it, I thought all the prequels were really good – it was actually kind of fun to watch them after seeing The Avengers because so much more made sense knowing how Shield, Black Widow, Hawkeye the relationship of Thor and Loki all fit together.
@Alicia – thank you, although those hammers hold quite the block of cheese! It was more than I bargained for ๐
I love the Hulk juice! great idea!
Wanna adopt me? You guys have way too much fun.
@Monique – Thanks! We rarely drink Kool-Aid but this was just the perfect color for 'Hulk Juice' – although I was praying that no one spilled any on the carpet!
@Tammie – you know you're welcome to join in the fun any time Bestie ๐
What a great idea! My five year old loves anything that is super hero related. My family will have to try this soon ๐ Thanks for the idea!
That Thor hammer and the Hulk juice is AWESOME! My son is a cheese fanatic, he'd love to find a bunch of Thor hammers in his lunch box one day!
Wow! It looks you had such a fun party!
Looks like you had about as much fun shopping as you did on your Avengers Family Fun Evening! It's great to have family fun!
We love the Avengers. Of course we have 'Thor' 'Captain America' 'Hulk' and will have 'The Avengers' by the weekend. My Hubz has been collecting Marvel comics since he was a kid in the 60's. We have several boxes in a closet. He is the one who got me interested—now I'm hooked ๐
Wow! This is a great idea.
Love the hammer snacks! So creative!
Such a fun idea!!
We can't wait to watch The Avengers on DVD! Looks like you had lots of fun ๐
