Last year when Wreck-It Ralph was first announced, our daughter was rightly excited about it. As an avid gamer, a Disney film about video games, even arcade games, was enough to have her impatiently tapping her feet. When it was finally released in theaters and she got to watch it…it knocked Tangled from the top of her favorite animated Disney film list. I really cannot overstress how much she loves this movie, it’s heart warming and hilarious in all the right spots. I can attest to how much she was bouncing off the walls when we received the Wreck-It Ralph 4-Disc Blu-ray Combo pack. She was so impatient she had to go watch it once by herself because she couldn’t wait for family movie night.
For decades, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) has played the bad guy in his popular video game. In a bold move, he embarks on an action-packed adventure and sets out to prove to everyone that he is a true hero with a big heart. As he explores exciting new worlds, he teams up with some unlikely new friends including feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman).
As a family we watched it in 3D, which always adds a stunning layer of depth to the movie as a whole. Even if you can’t watch it in 3D, you should still watch it, this movie is amazing (in case I haven’t told you yet how much our daughter likes it!).
On the discs included in the 4-Disc combo pack, there are numerous bonus features some of which include:
Video Game Commercials – Fake but realistic commercials for the three games in the movie, Fix-It Felix Jr., Sugar Rush and Hero’s Duty
Deleted & Alternate Scenes – These give interesting background on how much the story changed
Bit by Bit: Creating the Worlds of Wreck-It Ralph – Insight from the developers on what they did to create the worlds of Wreck-It Ralph; you’ll be impressed, trust me!
Probably one of the best features though is the new “Disney Intermission” that is being released on some of the newer DVDs from Disney. On the Blu-ray disc exclusively, these intermissions can be activated when the movie is paused, giving some entertainment to the kids while you take a restroom break (or the other way around!).
The intermission here is ‘The Gamer’s Guide to Wreck-It Ralph,’ small narrated snippets (featuring Chris Hardwick from Talking Dead), that point out the many (and I mean many) video game and Disney references hidden in the movie’s backdrop.
Wreck-It Ralph has become one of our family’s favorite movies, and one that I think any gamer, Disney fan or otherwise, will enjoy watching. This is probably one of those DVDs that is worth buying as your children, and grandchildren will want to watch it over and over again.
Wreck-It Ralph is available in a variety of formats in store and online now!
Tammy Litke received a media sample of the DVD to review. All opinions are her own. This post contains affiliate links.
