Mark you calendars: March 2 is the 22nd anniversary of Read Across America Day, which is also Dr. Seuss’s 115th birthday!
Need some Dr. Seuss products to help you celebrate? Then we have a few ideas here:
Movie
Read the book together and then round it out by watching the animated companion to it!
Horton Hears a Who! – (rated G, 86 minutes)
This is by far my favorite Dr. Seuss movie. The characters are quirky and fun. Steve Carrel and Jim Carey are stellar in their voice performances. And of course the movie contains classic Dr. Seuss rhyming patterns. Your kids (and maybe you!) will giggle endlessly at this one.

BOOKS
Did you know that there was a Dr. Seuss book published from a story that his wife found stashed in a box in their home more than 20 years after his death?! His art director Cathy Goldsmith carefully added color to the 50-year old illustrations and then pieced together the text just as Dr. Seuss himself would have.
What Pet Should I Get? is geared for ages 3 to 7. What happens when a brother and sister visit a pet store to pick a pet? Naturally, they can’t choose just one! The tale captures a classic childhood moment—choosing a pet—and uses it to illuminate a life lesson: that it is hard to make up your mind, but sometimes you just have to do it!
Two other Dr. Seuss early reader books are Dr. Seuss’s Book of Colors and Dr. Seuss’s Book of Animals. Newly rhymed riffs with previous illustrations and artwork will nurture a love of reading—and of Seussian creatures—with these great new concept books for beginning readers!
How do you celebrate Read Across America Day?!
I love all these different ways of appreciating Dr. Seuss’s work! He was a genius!
Reading is important!
