Wouldn’t you like to be able to take a peek in your home to see what’s going on even when you’re not around – or in this case a PEQ?! Well you can with the PEQ wireless smart home system. With an internet connection, a master hub and some wireless modules you can keep tabs on your home; while you’re in it, and when you’re not!
PEQ is easy to set up (I did it myself with no help from my husband, the resident tech expert), and it doesn’t take long to get the system up and running.
A PEQ home starter kit comes with a Netgear hub and a window & door sensor. But there are other modules you can purchase for it. From cameras to lamp modules, water sensors to a thermostat.
You set up your account and the different devices either through your account online or with an iOS or Android app. There are video tutorials every step of the way which makes it so most people will be able to install the system with little to no issues.
The beauty of the PEQ home system is that you can set rules on when you want your devices to function (or not function!) depending on whether you’re home, if it’s at night, when you’re at work or even on vacation.
For instance I set rules for both the lamp module and the water sensor.
I set up the lamp module to turn the lamp in our daughter’s bedroom to go on every night at sunset and then turn off 4 hours later.
You can even just turn the light on and off manually from the app. Perhaps when you’re on vacation you just want to turn the light on at 8 pm on Sunday and then have it turn off at 6 am on Monday. You can schedule a rule for that! And you can have it come on and off at a different time each day if you’re looking to deter someone casing the house, because it will look like someone is home with the lights being on at random times during the week.
There are so many possibilites to PEQ from knowing when your children come home from school with door sensors, to monitoring your infant in the other room with the camera. But I think my favorite is the water sensor and that goes back to many years ago when we had a flood in one of the homes we lived in. We could have avoided so much damage if we would have been alerted in the early morning hours of the water that was starting to seep across our basement floor.
Thankfully we didn’t have any major water problems when I tried the PEQ system out. But to show you how it works I filled a plate with water and then placed the sensor on it.
I had a rule set up to send me a text any time if the sensor came in contact with water. And sure enough a few minutes after I put it on the plate…I received a text letting me know that there was a water problem.
There is one caveat to PEQ, and that is that you have to subscribe to the monthly service to use the hub and devices. It’s competitively priced at $9.99 a month, and that price allows you to have as many devices (as well as rules for each device) connected to your hub as you’d like.
It includes a history of all the alerts your devices have made, notifications to you by the format you choose and cloud storage of any pictures & videos and live streaming from the camera. All of that plus regular updates to the user interface and live customer support 7 days a week should you have problems. It also doesn’t have a contract, so if you decide it’s not for you, you don’t have to keep using it. However you do have to invest in the devices, and it does cost a bit up front to do that.
You can see in the history where I was testing the sensor with a damp paper towel as per the set up instuctions!
For the devices we received to try out; the hub starter kit with the door & window sensor, the lamp module, the indoor/outdoor camera, the water sensor and a motion sensor, the cost would be $384.70. But seeing as you need to pay the monthly fee to use the devices it may be a cost vs. peace of mind debate for some home owners. It certainly has some nice features and the ability to schedule rules and be able to manipulate the devices from your phone or tablet while you’re elsewhere is appealing.
I admit I kind of like the idea of being able to monitor what’s going on in my home when I’m not there. Having a smart home system like PEQ is sort of like having a super power.
PEQ is available for purchase online at mypeq.com and various Best Buy locations across the US, with more distribution partners being announced this fall. To learn more about this smart home system and all it has to offer visit their website.
