Review: Just One Charm Pack Quilts and Frayed Edges

2020 was quite a year wasn’t it? While it certainly put a damper on a lot of activities, it wasn’t all bad.  Since we tried to stay home as much as we could I decided to take up a new hobby, and I chose quilting.

I don’t know why I thought I should start big, but I did 😉  and made a lap quilt for my very first project.  It is far from perfect and I have SO much left to learn and improve upon.  I’m excited to try my next project from a book called Just One Charm Pack Quilts by Cheryl Brickey.

Over the last year I’ve been slowly amassing a stash of fabric.  Much of it is quite random one charm pack here a fat quarter pack there, since I was buying sales and clearance. So I have all the fabric but I haven’t known what to actually do with it!  Just One Charm Pack Quilts is going to help me out with that.  Each project in the book is made using only one charm pack, one extra fabric, and a background fabric. All 18 projects come in two colorway options with easy to follow instructions and illustrations.

The book begins with helpful information for those newer to quilting about fabrics and bindings.  Then it proceeds to the 18 different projects.  They range in size but are primarily lap quilts.  Being a visual learner when it comes to sewing and quilting I really appreciated the way the instructions are laid out with the pictures to illustrate cutting and placement.  I would say anyone who has at least sewn or quilted one small project will have no problem following along with any of the patterns.

At the end of the book there are coloring book pages of all the different quilt prints.  I think this is a fantastic way to relax to just color them, but of course it also gives you the chance to plot out a color scheme of how you’d like your quilt to look before you make it.

Just One Charm Pack Quilts: Bust Your Precut Stash with 18 Projects in 2 Colorways by Cheryl Brickey is available for pre-order on Amazon.com and will be released on June 25, 2021.

The other book I had a chance to review in the last couple of weeks is a novel titled Frayed Edges by Carol Dean Jones.

This is an entertaining and easy to read book about a senior’s quilting club and a mystery to solve.  This is the 12th book in the “a quilting cozy” series, but the first one I have read.  I’m going to go back and read 1-11, but naturally being part of a series you can tell that there has been character development prior to this latest story, however I was able to follow along well despite not having read the other books.

The book also provides the instructions to make “the featured quilt” in the story, so it’s like getting two purchases in one, a book and a quilt pattern!  One of the other great things I got out of the book is that the quilting club and its members are always in engaged in some kind of project, so I got a few ideas of future things to look for patterns for, that I would not have thought of making without reading it.

Frayed Edges by Carol Dean Jones is also available for pre-order on Amazon.com and will be released on June 25, 2021.

  1. Hi Tammy,
Thank you so much for your kind review of my most recent book, Frayed Edges. You indicated that you might be interested in reading others in the series so I wanted to let you know that I’m running a drawing for Books #1 & #2 on my website. There will be five winners so you stand a good chance. Its a good way to get started on the series and see if you like it.
The blog announcing the drawing comes out on June 25th and if you sign up as a follower before that, you will receive an email announcement. Again, thank you for taking the time to read my book and I appreciate the nice review. Carol
