No Selfie Saturday: A Day to Focus On Others In Denton County

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church. All opinions are 100% mine.

Selfie Saturday… is this a thing? Ah yes indeed it is.  I wonder about our culture though with the selfies that are all over the internet (admittedly even a few of my own), that we need to add a hashtag for a certain day of the week so we can add even more.

But what if we were more mindful, for just one day, not of ourselves but others?  What if we took a break from our hectic schedules, put our phones (and front facing cameras) down, went dark on social media (gasp!) and be fully present for a day of service?

undefinedTrietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Denton County, TX is inviting the community to do just that this coming Saturday, October 24.  They are calling it No Selfie Saturday.

They have over 40 local service opportunities across 7 categories that North Texas residents can help with.  You can find one that feeds into your interests and inspires you to serve.

Even if you don’t have the entire day to commit there are service projects that you can sign up for that will take just 2 hours of your time with other opportunities spanning a whole day.  And with project available for all abilities and ages you can come by yourself, bring your family, friends, and/or co-workers.  Boy and Girl Scout Troops can get involved and get some service hours in for patches and awards, school groups, honor societies, even sports teams can join together to help out in the community.  Everyone is invited to take a part in one of the service projects. You can find all of them here: http://www.tmumc.org/noselfie.

Trietsch would love to see 1200 people from the area to get involved, be fully present (hint, hint that means putting the phone on mute & staying off social meda.. or better yet leaving it at home if you are able to!) and involved in these community service projects.

If you have some time on October 24, 2015 join them at 8 AM in the Family Life Center at Trietsch, where you can be nourished both with breakfast and a worship service to start the day of service off.

If you (like me, due to a trip that I’ll be on at the time) are unable to attend on October 24th, that’s okay!  Trietsch will be doing collection drives the entire month of October to support this event.  You can find items that you can donate here: http://www.tmumc.org/cant-attend-donate.

While Trietsch is encouraging a social media time-out for Saturday, October 24th you can follow them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tmumc and Twitter (@TrietschUMC) for more information on the event and to receive No Selfie Saturday badges to put on your social channels the day of the event (so your friends will know you are still alive even though you aren’t tweeting them back, just serving in your community!)undefined
