Make Art Make Mistakes: A Creativity Sketchbook

Gift Guide Pick

I love the material MoMA puts out for kids.  Among their books is one in particular I’d like to share with you, Make Art Make Mistakes: A Creativity Sketchbook ($16.99, Chronicle Books).

Each page has an activity of a simple, but fundamental art theme.  Lines, colors, patterns, etc.  There are also pages with visual inspirational quotes from artists like Georgia O’Keefe and Pablo Picasso.

Since looking through this book, I realize that while its intended audience is kids, would-be artists of all ages will be encouraged to look at the world around them in an artistic way, when doing the activities in Make Art Make Mistakes.

The cover and inner pages are vibrant – deliberately giving the user ideas to complete the activities.  Taking the instructions given and combining them in new ways, will provoke thoughtfulness out of the artist as well as some beautiful artwork, I’m sure, and perhaps a lot of abstract too.
