Spring is here and New Year resolutions have been broken. If you’re in that place, you may be interested in the a book from the Hilarious Collection of Living Life to the Fullest from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne, Fat is the New 30: The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Coping with (the crappy parts) of Life.
Trust THE Sweet Potato Queen, Jill Conner Browne to come up with the solution to most of life’s problems. Leader of the Sweet Potato Queens movement that has more than 6,200 chapters in 37 countries around the world, Jill Conner Browne is know for her tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and for spreading what she fondly refers to as “sparkle”.
If you guessed that FAT IS THE NEW 30: The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Coping with (the crappy parts of) Life, covers just about everything that you can be discouraged about, you’d be right. Browne has an uncanny sense of humor, and by the end of her essays on either being economically strapped, raising kids, or feeling old, you might feel your circumstances are not as bad as you perceive them to be.
“Boss Queen” Jill Conner Browne conceived of and found the Sweet Potato Queens in the early 1980s. After passing through a patch of the doldrums she found herself in need of some excitement, and a new direction. Jill discovered that she lived near Vardaman, Mississippi, self-proclaimed Sweet Potato Capital of the World, and inspiration struck – she volunteered to be the queen for the farmers’ annual festival.
What you do need to note if you are not familiar with Jill Conner Browne’s writing is that she is bawdy (in other words if you tend to me modest and conservative, some parts of the book may make you blush) – and she uses language that quite honestly is more fitting for a sailor than for a ‘Queen’. I don’t completely like her cussing so much. I did however bust a gut laughing, as I read through this book.
Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for this post; I was sent an advanced reader copy of the book. Opinions are my own.
