Celebrity Stylist Rita Hazan Temporary Root Concealer

My mom has passed down a lot of things to me in life, both by nurture and by nature. But one of the things her DNA was dominant over my dad’s was hair color…or lack there of, however you want to describe it. My mom had COMPLETELY white hair by the time she was 41. I mean yeah, at least it was pure white, and not a salt & pepper or a yellow-white, but still…41.

As I get closer to that age, I’m getting that eerie feeling that…I’m turning into my mom!!! Okay, not really but I have a lot of white hair, and am too cheap to go to the salon every month to have it colored or highlighted, so I do it at home.

But you know how that goes. No appointment, no time, too busy, etc., etc., and 4 weeks turn into 5 and then 6 and then I have to go somewhere and …gah!…those roots are looking pretty bad.

There’s this product out by celebrity hair colorist Rita Hazan, which is a temporary root concealer. You just spray it on when you need to cover that grey (or in my case white). It comes in a variety of colors so you should be able to find one that matches your hair color pretty decently.

This product works well. It is formulated to dry in minutes, to stay on and not rub off on fabric until you shampoo it out. There’s no alcohol, ammonia or peroxide in it so it won’t damage your hair.  It also doesn’t damage any surfaces you may get it on while spraying like your sink or countertop, it wipes off easily and cleanly.

I probably used too much the first time I tried it.  You have to spray it about 6 inches away from your scalp and I couldn’t tell right away how much I needed to spray on for coverage.  Once you’ve done it, you will have a better idea of how long you need to spray and your target areas.

I color my hair a lot lighter than my roots. The color specialists sent me the Dark Blonde based on a picture I sent to them. It matches my natural color great, but not so much the rest of my dye job, LOL!

That being said the product works at covering the grey. My pictures below show a before and after. You’ll have to excuse my husband’s photography skills on the first picture, and they were taken in different lighting which is why the second picture looks ‘lighter’. However you can see the white/grey hairs in the first one, and they are seemingly non-existent except for a couple in the second.

I think if I were to purchase this product again, I would try the Blonde/Golden Blonde to see if it would blend in to the rest of my hair better.  Then I could see which one looks best, or use the two colors together.

There isn’t a lot in the can, just 1 oz. BUT it’s not for everyday use…it’s for a quick fix up. From what I’ve used so far and can gauge what’s left, I would guess you can get about seven to ten applications out of it. It costs $24.00 a can at Sephora which if my ‘guesstimate’ of the applications is correct, is about $2.50 to $3.00 per emergency root fix-up. The value is subjective as for some that would be a bargain, and for others they’d view it as expensive. I do like the size of the can for traveling as it’s compliant with travel size regulations.
