Shakespeare’s works are some of the archetypes of classics, for both reading and performing. Whichever way you choose to take it, 60-Minute Shakespeare helps you do it. We read the newest edition in the series “Taming of the Shrew,” and Cass Foster has condensed the play so that it’s shorter and easier to read. If you want to act out the play, the abridged version helps the performance to keep to an hour (hence the title).
While the original language is preserved, definitions for the words and phrases, in a vernacular no longer used, are provided. This way the students have a better understanding of the nuances and depth of Shakespeare’s writing. Additionally, on the performance side, the book comes with instructions on feigning the various moments of stage combat, which is a nice touch.
This would be a great resource for a homeschool middle school or high school co-op group. The format is perfect for those weekly times together, and at a price point of $8.99 it’s affordable for everyone to have a copy of their own.
There are currently seven titles in the 60-Minute Shakespeare series by Cass Foster to view the other titles and learn more about the series visit http://www.fivestarpublications.com/shakespeare/sixty.html.
