Tips for Organizing Your Plastic Food Containers

How does it happen?  You put all the containers together with the lids and inevitably, it turns into a black hole of missmatched containers and lids (half of them missing) and in such disarray you can’t find a container and lid to match if your life depended on it.

Y’all know what I’m talking about…and if you don’t because your plastic container storage cupboard is always neat, well you can move on to the next post 😉  OR you can leave your wisdom in the comments, we’ll take that too!

In the meantime I took the challenge on of ordering our container/lid void the other week and want to share with you what’s working for us.  And the fact that we’ve been able to keep that section of our cupboards organized for more than two weeks…well that kind of proves it works 😉

First I emptied all the containers and lids out of the cupboard and matched all the lids up with them.  Any extra lids got tossed, if there was a container that could be used without a lid for something I did keep it to repurpose it.

Then I went out and bought two 12 qt. dish pans and two storage baskets with a front handle to pull it out.

I put my larger containers at the back of the cupboard with their matching lids.  Then the smaller containers (around the 2 cup or less volume ones), I nested into each other and fit as many as I could in the two dishpans.  Square in one and round in another.

Round on the top shelf of the cupboard, square on the bottom (yes, I had to use some vinyl and my Silhouette Cameo to label them!)

Then I sorted all the lids by size and put them in the front handled storage baskets.

Any small containers that didn’t fit in the dish pans…were set aside to give away.  I’d never be able to use all the containers that fit in there at one time…so I don’t need more than those that fit in them.

It’s really working well for us.  The cupboard is SO much more organized and I can find a suitable container and its lid easily and quickly.  Plus everyone in the home now has no excuse on where to put them when they unload the dishwasher!

  1. Mind blowing tips, whenever we purchase plastic box or container, we should look at the bottom of the box, somewhere there if you can see the numbers #3 or #7, then it might release chemicals like BPA (bisphenol A) or PVC (phthalates) which has an adverse effect on our body.

  2. I tried this organizing tip at home. Everyone just loved it! Thanks for the tip, keep up the good work!
