I write the Switched-On Schoolhouse Series twice a month to share our family’s experience using this software based curriculum in our home.
Some students get overwhelmed when they see a large assignment on the pages before them. When Amber sees the study guides in her Geography and Chemistry texts, she often gets discouraged because the vocabulary and questions cover two or three pages. She plods along slowly and by the end of the assignment she has lost whatever initial interest she may have had in doing a good job of answering the questions.
In the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum, questions are presented one at a time. For a student that gets overwhelmed when seeing many questions at once, this is an ideal way to learn. The student can focus on one question at a time. They don’t get distracted by what’s ahead, or discouraged because of how much is left to do.
Additionally, the types of questions that require answering are mixed up to keep the material from getting stale. The first question might be a multiple choice, the second a true/false, the third a paragraph answer, the fourth a true/false again, the fifth a fill in the blank, and so on.
Don’t take that to mean that the questions are necessarily easy though. There are lots of questions presented that make the student think deeply and take what they’ve read in the material and infer, developing reasoning skills. If the student has the sound on while answering, they’re given affirmation or encouraged to try again to succeed.
I personally think the way the questions are presented in the daily work, quizzes and tests, provide a good balance of variety and challenge that will help the student in further grade levels and academics.
