I drink coffee every. single. day. Multiple times. I generally use my single serve coffee machine to brew, but on occasion I will drag out my French Press, or do a pour over. I’m pretty picky about my coffee addiction, so instant coffee.. nuh uh, I don’t use that stuff. So when I received an e-mail to try out Steeped Coffee, a single serve instant coffee brewed similar to tea that tastes amazing, I was definitely intrigued. They offered to send me some gratis samples to try it out and share my thoughts with you, so here we go!
Steeped Coffee launched when serial entrepreneur and coffee lover Josh Wilbur decided to combine the convenience of a single-serving brew method with the premium quality of ethically sourced coffee. Wilbur wanted to redeem the environmental dilemma created by wasteful coffee pods. Happy to do the math, Wilbur points out over 10 billion unrecyclable pods accumulate in landfills each year – enough to wrap around the earth more than 110 times if placed side-by-side. Moreover, each type of pod depends on expensive and often moldy brewing machines, which are also unrecyclable.
It took Wilbur seven years to innovate the proprietary Steeped Coffee system that delivers fresh roasted, pre-portioned, precision ground, micro batched coffee in customized Full Immersion Filters. “Premium coffee roasters have shied away from offering their specialty beans in single-serve packaging because it’s been nearly impossible to keep ground coffee fresh, which quickly ruins the taste,” said Wilbur. “With our Nitro Sealed bags, oxygen is replaced with nitrogen, so the coffee stays fresh as if it was ground moments ago.”
So you take one of these Nitro Sealed bags, sort of like a tea bag, pour 8 oz of hot water over it (in a cup naturally),
then dunk the bag several times to saturate and for added strength.
Steep it in hot water about five minutes(+), as Steeped Coffee puts it on their packaging “Let it ride”.
And Drink.
The Steeped Coffee brand is available in five roasts: light (Sunrise Blend), medium (California Blend), dark (Odyssey Blend), French roast (Driftwood Blend), and a single-origin Swiss Water Process decaf (Eventide Decaf).
Features of Steeped Coffee include:
• 100% Specialty Coffee: quality coffee ethically sourced directly from farmers
• Nitro Sealed: removes oxygen, stopping the clock on freshly ground beans
• Ultrasonic Edges: no glue, staples, or wasted materials for max steeping
• Full Immersion Filter: non-GMO filters that regulate ideal water-in and maximum flavor-out
• Guilt-Free Packaging: made using plant-based renewable and compostable materials
• Micro Batching: roasted locally in small batches
• Precision Ground: consistent water-cooled grinding to the micron
• Pre-Portioned: consistent SCA recommended water-to-coffee ratios
• Just Add Water: single-serve convenience with no machines required
• Barista Approved: tested by multiple independent specialty coffee Q-graders for freshness, quality, and taste
So what did I think?… Well in terms of ease, convenience and taste – Steeped Coffee definitely hits the mark. It takes just a bit longer than brewing a coffee pod, but with less stress on the environment, so if you are eco-conscious this is definitely a step up for a fresh cup of java than from your single serve coffee maker.
The taste was really very good and certainly not what you would get out of a jar or stir in pack instant coffee. It certainly tasted as good or better than some of the pod blends I’ve purchased before. I don’t drink a lot of decaf as caffeine doesn’t particularly bother me even in the evenings, so I found the decaf good, without much to compare it too. My favorite of the other blends, was the Driftwood (French Roast), which as a straight black, no cream no sugar kind of coffee drinker says something about the quality 😉 French Roast is a finicky beast for some roasters and it can actually lack flavor and taste burnt if not done right, but the Steeped Coffee blend has a great robust flavor without any bitterness.
I honestly don’t think I will replace my single serve brewer or my coffee pods at home, for a number of reasons, mostly for the reason that I enjoy the broad variety of brands and flavors that I can brew using it. But for on the go… Steeped Coffee is without a doubt an extraordinary option to get a fantastic cup of coffee as long as you can find hot water or can bring your own.
Grab a thermos fill it up with hot water add your Steeped Coffee Nitro bag and you have the best cup of coffee of all the soccer parents sitting on the sidelines. Airplane coffee -meh 😐 Steeped Coffee packs easily fit in a carry on for use on an airplane or other forms of travel (no more gas station coffee on road trips here!) When I found out Royal Caribbean frowns on bringing a single server brewer into a state room (BOO!), I was quite upset. I have not really been a fan of the general brewed coffee aboard the cruises we’ve been on. However now I can bring all the Steeped Coffee I want and I can ensure that every morning, I’ll have an amazing cup of coffee to start my day.

I have tried the Steeped Coffee Odyssey blend and I really like it.
The Odyssey blend has a unique taste that has a dark chocolate taste to it that I like.
