Ships, Busses and Trains – Oh My!

One of the ports we stopped at in Alaska on our Disney Cruise was Skagway.  We took an excursion where we boarded a bus and drove up to Carcross, Yukon in Canada, and then took the White Pass Rail back down to Skagway.
Before we even left town, we got to see this neat contraption.

In winter that far north train horns just don’t cut it on the tracks!  You need a “snowblower” of extreme power to move snow out of the way!  How cool is that?
Just outside of the Canadian border our bus stopped so we could get a view of a lake and build stone cairns.

Once we made our way into the Yukon, we drove a bit farther out from Carcross and came to this phenomenal sight — Emerald Lake.  These pictures are NOT photoshopped!  The water was really that deep green.  It gets its color because of the light that reflects off of the minerals in the shallow water.

After that we went to an Itidarod Musher Camp and got to see some Alaskan Husky dogs.
(I look “padded” on this picture because it was so cold we layered. A. LOT. !  When we got back to Skagway I bought myself a heavier jacket for the rest of the cruise, because we had not packed warm enough clothing!).

Taking the train back down to Skagway was amazing.
It was really foggy the day we went so we didn’t get great pictures – but you can see that narrow trail where the sign marker is…that’s the trail that the men took to bring their supplies to the Yukon where the gold rush was!  They had to make this trip on that trail four or five times, to get all the required supplies to their claim!

Back at the souvenir shop, I saw some train horn kits I thought would be fun for my mom to bring back for my nephews.  But she didn’t think my sister would appreciate that very much!
