Edgar Rice Burroughs is mainly remembered today as the man who wrote “Tarzan”, but The Princess of Mars series (which is what John Carter is based on) is in my opinion one of his ultimate works.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (WALL•E) “John Carter” is an adaptation of Burroughs’ books, the sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars).  The movie isn’t spot-on with the books, as it combines portions of three of the books into one movie, so you’ll notice some combining of sorts.  Regardless it holds true to Burroughs’ general theme and story.

With Taylor Kitsch (watching him flexing his muscles is not to be missed!) as John Carter and Lynn Collins the movie’s heroine Dejh Thoris headlining the cast, other notable stars support this dynamic duo, Willem Dafoe as the voice of Tars Tarkas and Dominic West as Sab Than.  And of course there is the character of Woola (the ‘monster dog’), who is fast, energetic, and loyal…so fun to watch.

Today is the day John Carter 3D on DVD is released!  I love how the lenticular on the box cover also has a 3D look and feel.

We had already seen John Carter in the theaters in March but just saw it in 2D, so as for the story line we knew what was expected.  But I was amazed by the 3D on the DVD.  We had invited some friends over to watch it with us, and one of them said (and I quote…) “That’s some good 3D”.  We were honestly surprised by what we saw, the cinematography is top-notch.

The story moves along at a good pace, it’s complex and compelling.

You get so much in the John Carter 4-Disc Combo Pack (3D Blu-ray, 2D Blu-ray, DVD & Digital Copy), don’t discount purchasing it just because you don’t own a 3D TV.  This DVD should find a comfortable niche on your entertainment unit shelf.  Plus, this would be a great addition to a collection for any dads out there that are sci-fi fans – just in time for Father’s Day!

The Blu-ray bonus features include:
• Disney Second Screen – Explore John Carter’s journal with this innovative in-world experience and uncover a trove of fascinating details that extend the mythology of the movie.
• 360 Degrees of John Carter – Experience every aspect of the filmmaking process on one of the movie’s biggest production days.
• Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by Director, Andrew Stanton
• Barsoom Bloopers
• Life by the Second: The Shanzam Unit (digital premiere)
• 100 Years in the Making – Follow the journey of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ story, from its origins as a pulp novel to its arrival onscreen.
