I remember 14 years ago when we first moved to the U.S., researching Vonage services because we needed a second phone line for my husband’s job. Fast forward to this past month when I now was researching it again, but this time it was for their app, Vonage Mobile.
Vonage Mobile is free to download (and you don’t have to have a Vonage land line to use it) and with it you can call, text, and video chat. I admit I was intrigued and so we downloaded it to my husband’s Android phone, my iPhone and our daughter’s iTouch to give it a whirl.
It’s fairly simple to get started. On my iPhone, I went to the App Store searched for “Vonage Mobile” and installed the app. You enter your mobile number and it will verify you by sending a code via SMS. If that doesn’t work you’ll get a phone call on your device with the code. Once you enter the code, you give the app access to your contacts and you’re good to go.
All calls, texts and video chats are free no matter where the people are geographically if they both have the Vonage Mobile app installed, so you’ll want to check under the “V Free” navigation tab to see if any of your contacts are already using it.
If not you can send them a text message inviting them to join, and if they sign up using your link you’ll get $1.00 in credit for paid services. You can accrue up to $10 that way.
The main reason we were interested in this app was for the functionality of my husband to be able to text message with our daughter on her iTouch. Since I have an iPhone I just use iMessenger, but since he has an Android phone he didn’t have the ability to text her at all.
So after we downloaded the Vonage Mobile app on her iTouch we set it up with my mobile number.
Now as along as she is in range of a Wi-Fi connection she can text with Dad and anyone else who has the Vonage Mobile app installed too.
The app is also great for me since my current cell phone plan doesn’t allow me to call to Canada, and that’s where all my family lives. For a limited time the Vonage Mobile app has free calls to ANY landline or mobile phone in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico (up to 3000 minutes per month).
So I can call my mom or my sister using the app and my wi-fi or data connection. And since my plan has only 300 minutes per month, should I find my local calls are getting close to that limit I can use the Vonage Mobile app to tie me over to the next month.
Vonage Mobile works great for us and I recommend it for parents to be able to text their kids from an Android phone to an iTouch, or for people with limited minutes on their monthly plans if they have access to Wi-Fi or unlimited data. It is simple to set up and has good sound clarity, and of course best of all it’s free to use with anyone else that has the app (and for calls within the US, Canada & P.R.). Try it out for yourself, and invite your friends to join you.
Check back later this week for more info on the app and the chance to win something fun!
We are looking to switch after our contract expires. This sounds like a good way to get the most out of any plan.
We don't even have a land line, this has cool features!
I've never used Vonage, but that sounds like a great app!
I think it's great that they offer that referral credit.
You just reminded me that I need to start using my Vonage Service, I forgot I even had it! I signed up and never used the phone.
I'll have to check this out!
Lots of great features! Great review!
Oh that is awesome, my husband was never able to text my daughter either (until he got an iPhone). Definitely a plus.
This is a great app! I need to download it!
Very cool! I wonder if they have it for Windows phones?
That's pretty neat. I heard that Magic Jack has something similar, though I have not tried it out.
I've never used Vonage but it seems like a service I should definitely look into to.
That's awesome they have gone mobile. WE thought about getting them for our home service but have yet to make the leap.
That's so cool! I used to have an iTouch & hated not being able to text from it.
Looks like a great app! Thanks for sharing.
This may be good for my daughter that has a phone that we gave her but don't have activated. She can play games on it, but it would be good if she could text too.
