Effective Way to Clean Carpet and Fabric Stains

Our house is 28 years old and we ‘think’ the previous owners replaced the carpets about 16 years ago.  Due to that there are plenty of random stain marks — and it makes them look … less than stellar.  I know I need to get them professionally cleaned, but I’ve been putting it off for now because we’re actually considering replacing them all together, in the meantime though I want those stains gone!

Seeing as this is our dining room floor, I’m pretty confident this is a beverage/food stain of some kind. I’ve tried several different spot cleaners on it, to no avail.  Sometimes it looks like I’ve removed it, but the stain then resurfaces later.

The kit, (available on Amazon.com for $19.95) comes with a professional spray bottle and six refills to each make a 32 oz bottle of cleaner.  While I’ve used cleaners similar to this before, I like the fact that there aren’t cartridges or that I don’t have to pour a concentrated solution into a spray bottle.  These packet refills really are completely mess free.To clean carpets, place 2 packets of the Greenwald’s Carpet & Fabric Stain Remover in the spray bottle and fill with 1 qt of water.  Let sit for a minute and then gently shake.  For fabrics, just use 1 packet.

Then spray the ‘dirty’ area liberally, let the solution sit for a minute, scrub with a brush, blot with a paper towel or clean white cloth, rinse with water and blot dry.

I’m always a bit nervous when using new cleaning solutions in my home, so I actually just made the solution with the 1 packet of cleaner rather than 2 to clean my carpets.  I started with the top picture.  After using the Greenwald’s Carpet & Fabric Stain Remover on it once, it cleaned fairly well but you could still faintly see the spots.After using it a second time, you wouldn’t even know there had been stains there, and so far they have not resurfaced. I’m sure had I made the solutions full-strength as the instructions said, I wouldn’t have had to do it twice.  My tip is though that by making it the 1/2 strength for fabrics/upholstery I can use it for both purposes carpets and fabrics, it just might take a bit longer and a little more effort to clean the carpet stains, and I’m okay with that.
