I have to say I haven’t been a regular user of conditioner in my hair care routine.  I have very thick hair and it has a pretty good “temperament”; meaning it doesn’t get very oily or dry, and I get cuts regularly so I usually don’t have split ends.   So I didn’t really think I needed it.  Learning that the inside of my hair is getting damaged by all my styling was a real eye opener.
