I’m going to be completely honest and upfront…I don’t buy Organic Mac and Cheese. We generally buy the brand in blue (oh yes you know the one I’m talking about), so when I was approached to do a taste test between Back to Nature Organic Mac and Cheese and the leading competitor, I was interested not just to see if Back to Nature could stand against the competition, but also to see if organic Mac and Cheese tastes any different than regular Mac and Cheese.

We did the taste test on two different evenings. The first one we compared the “shape” pasta, Back to Nature has bugs, the competitor bunnies. We skipped the whole blindfold the family while we eat part, so in this taste test it was apparent which was which, but because we had never tried either brand before we really had no bias to either one.

It was actually pretty revealing. Here’s the breakdown.

1. Pasta – We found the Back to Nature pasta just a bit starchier than the competitor. We actually preferred the texture of the competitors pasta better. My daughter said she’d rather eat bunnies than bugs…my husband said he’d rather eat bugs than bunnies…I was finding that whole conversation a little creepy so I didn’t weigh in on whether eating bugs or bunnies for dinner was preferable.

2. Sauce – Hands down we all preferred the taste of the Back to Nature cheese to the competitor’s sauce. Strangely enough though my husband followed the instructions (he made the Back to Nature, I made the competitor brand), and the Back to Nature shaped pasta sauce was really runny, almost a soup consistency. Whereas the competitor brand was thicker and creamier.

Verdict – Even though we liked the texture and consistency (and some of us the shape) of the competitor brand over Back to Nature, in the end the tastebuds rule and we felt if we were purchasing one or the other on the store shelf we would buy the Back to Nature (bugs and all!).

Next up was the Shells and Cheese varieties. Again we don’t buy this kind of product in organic, we buy the ones in the bright yellow box….so it was all new to us.

This time I did prepare them so that the family wouldn’t know which was which and this is what they had to choose from:

It’s funny how one’s previous food experiences play into your taste choices. We all preferred the Back to Nature Shells and Cheese (which is featured in the first picture). And we all said again because of the sauce, but this time we could really pinpoint why that was, and we all thought because it tasted saltier.  We don’t add a lot of spices to our food, but we do add some salt (not a lot, but I guess enough that it’s noticeable to our taste buds when it’s missing).

So again, Back to Nature won this round.

Back to Nature provided the products for this program at no cost to me for review.
