Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention on Blu-ray and DVD

Part of the reason many families choose to homeschool is because they understand how their children learn. Some kids learn best by reading, while others retain information better with hands-on projects.  My daughter…she learns best with media. So we use a lot of audio, computer programs and DVDs in our homeschool.

Lionsgate released Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention on Blu-ray and DVD (list price: $14.99) earlier this month. One can’t help but love that big grin on Wallace’s face and the crazy inventions he’s always coming up with.

Turns out though that this DVD is more than just fun and games, it’s educational. Let me tell you a little more about it.

The DVD contains the complete six-part BBC1 TV series of the same name, where Wallace & Gromit introduce viewers to amazing real-life inventions.

We’ve watched a couple of the episodes already, one for our physics class since one of the inventions in the “Come to Your Senses” episode is an “invisible cloak” dealing with the properties of bending light.

The episode “Nature Knows Best” deals with inventions inspired by plants and animals.  Although we personally don’t subscribe to some of the evolutionary theories that are included in the background of some of the inventions, the science behind them and what the inventors are gleaning from nature to make the inventions is fascinating.

For kids (and adults) that are itching to make their own contraptions the Special Features on the disc include Your World of Invention which gives instructions on how to build six of your own.  Things like an Upside-down-o-scope, a Spy Camera and an Air Rocket.

We’ve always enjoyed Aardman Animations productions (I can’t even count how many times our daughter has watched Chicken Run), and this we thought this DVD was great.  I think it would be a great supplement or ‘edutainment’ to include in your homeschool.  This may even inspire your children to make their own inventions.

Wallace & Gromit’s World of Inventions is available for purchase online and at retail stores. You can learn more at their Website http://www.wallaceandgromit.com and on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/wallaceandgromit.

Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for this post; Lionsgate sent me a media sample. Opinions are my own.
