My Review

The story begins with teenage Zenovia and her mother Audrey being witnessed to by another mother and daughter from a group of people know as "The Brethren".  Audrey, who has schizophrenia, is instantly take with Charlotte and her daughter and wants to attend fellowship with them when invited, and Zenovia agrees to avoid an episode that is bound to ensue if she doesn't indulge her mother.

Zenovia has worked hard to get good grades in school and is determined to attend college when finished, but the more entangled in The Brethren she and her mother become, the more questions she has and the more she questions her faith and the faith of those in the fellowship.  This teenage girl has her plate full as she tries to decipher where she stands in regards to the affections of three young men in her life as well.

Complicating everything more, is that Zenovia and Audrey have visions.  Zenovia hasn't quite figured out why she has them, or what she should do about them either.

The book initially takes place in the mid-nineties, although I found while reading it, somewhat out of tune with that time period.  I was a young adult at the time, and somehow don't remember roller skating and pagers being a prominent part of what young people did or had at the time.  However, I admit to not being a part of the culture portrayed in the book either.

Generally speaking, I think this is a book that would be enjoyed by those that have dealt with or know something of the struggle that goes along side mental illness and/or have an interest in battling the effects of false teachings.
