Losing a Few Pounds

After two weeks of eating cruise food pretty much non-stop, proper nutrition and exercise are really on my mind.  I know there are many who take pills or supplements for losing a few pounds, but I like to just watch what I eat and exercise.  I gained 6 pounds on our cruise that I need to work off!  Because of eating things like...ice cream, ice cream and more ice cream!  (Drat that Goofy's Galley on Deck 9 that has unlimited ice cream...)

What I need to buy though is some good running shoes to help me get in shape.  I have usually purchased name brand athletic shoes in the past but have never bought New Balance ones before.  There are some TriCity New Balance Coupon Codes on the internet that I could use to help defray the costs of them.  Do any of my readers wear New Balance athletic shoes, and if so do you like them?

A Trip to the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Museum

Last Thursday we took a little day trip and went to LeMars, Iowa to visit the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Museum. It was a neat experience with much learned about one of my favorite treats!

The drive through the rolling hills and farmland of eastern South Dakota and western Iowa was beautiful. And we stopped to take a look at the Dordt College Campus as well, one of the colleges that Amber is looking at applying to in a few years.

If you would like to see more photos and information about our field trip to the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Museum, check out my post at The Homeschool Classroom:

T P Kitchen Review & Giveaway

Do you remember what it was like to go berry picking when you were young? How you could already smell and taste them, before you'd go in to pick it off the plant, just waiting to pop it into your mouth.

When I received the package from T P Kitchen, that's exactly how I felt! I hurried to open the box, knowing what was inside, so I could have a taste.

The first thing I want to tell you about this jam I received is that it is packaged incredibly well. When you order something from The Oregon Jam Lady at T P Kitchen, if it arrives damaged, it won't be their fault. My jam jar was nestled and well protected in the box it was sent in.

Upon opening the jar, it was immediately apparent that fresh, whole berries had gone into the making of this jam. The Oregon Jam Lady and her children, pick all the berries themselves in the hills of the Oregon coast.

All of her products are made in her fully licensed Department of Agriculture kitchen, in small batches, which retains the flavor and texture of the berries.

I got to try the variety with seeds, but it is also available without seeds (which is still a whole fruit jam, the seeds are just pressed out). The only other ingredients in this delicious jam, are sugar and pectin. It is available to purchase with Splenda, if sugar content is a concern for you. I love the fact that it is naturally organic too.

After having enjoyed it on toast for breakfast for a few mornings, I think I will try some of the other ways, The Oregon Jam Lady suggests using her best selling jam. One of them is to use it on oatmeal (breakfast is quickly becoming my favorite meal of the day). She also has an ice cream recipe on her site, and instructions on how to make a milk shake with it.

This jam is only one of the varieties she sells on her site. Huckleberry is another. She also sells jellies, oils, gift baskets, candy bark and chocolate spoons! Her jams start at just $4.79 for a 9oz jar. It is so worth the cost to order and have shipped!! This jam is yummy.

The Oregon Jam Lady at T P Kitchens is wanting you to have the finest homemade jam in Oregon! She is sponsoring a 2 Jam Gift Pack here on Three Different Directions. The random commenter will receive One Jar of the Wild Oregon Blackberry Jam and One Jar of the Wild Huckleberry Jam.

An American Carol

Have you heard the buzz about this movie?

We saw a couple of trailers on t.v. this past week, and it looked funny in an Airplane kind of way (without realizing in fact David Zucker was involved in both). But you know how it is, especially with comedies, the best clips are always shown in the 30 second t.v. trailers.

When Hubby found out, his hero, Bill O'Reilly had a cameo in it though, he went on an all out hunt to find out more about it. With Genius out with the friends this weekend, he thought it would be a good idea to go see it this evening. Now I'm not one for comedies in the theater, I generally feel that we can use our money better than that, but I just happened to have a free movie cash certificate, so since it's Hubby's birthday tomorrow, I decided to indulge him and said sure. Besides, that means popcorn, and there is nothing I like better than movie theater popcorn, except maybe Cold Stone Creamery's Pumpkin Ice Cream....which I was pretty sure I could convince him to get after the movie (and I did!).

Now I'm sure you figured out that if Bill O'Reilly is Hubby's hero, that we lean pretty far to the right. Since we're not American citizens though, we're sort of hanging lopsided on the sidelines of the whole political thing. This is the second election since we moved here, that I really wish we had an input in, alas it will need to wait for the next one.

Back to the movie though. It contains your basic slapstick humor of the Leslie Nielson variety, a lot of pokes at the terrorists (which one may or may not laugh at), and while gussied up with a lot of silliness and parody, it touches on a lot of issues that are real, true and pertinent to what is happening to this country.

A musical number showing that learning institutions are indoctrinating our children, and how many parents are oblivious to it or finding it out the hard way, shows why homeschooling is growing by leaps and bounds.

The ridiculousness of "radical Christianity" being compared to "radical Islam" in an airport screening procedure, was actually very funny, because it was so absurd.

The ghost of George Washington stating that he sought the counsel of God when leading the nation, and looking out on to the ruins of New York City 9/11, was a poignant and thought provoking scene.

While ultimately the movie is deemed as a parody on the documentaries of Michael Moore, and some of the jokes aren't funny, just really bad, the effect that it produces is that conservatives are basing their beliefs and political ideals on those that came before us. The great leaders of the nation who pioneered the constitution. The generals who fought the tough wars so that we can be a democratic country. The politicians who realized that there are enemies that threaten our freedoms.

For the $5.25 that we paid to actually see the movie (that of course does not include the popcorn, drink and pumpkin ice cream that was consumed during the course of the evening), I thought it was well spent. We were a little put off by some of the jokes, laughed a lot despite some offenses, and pondered even more on where the country is going despite the examples of the past.

So has anyone else seen this movie, or thought of seeing it? What did you think if you have?

It is an Illusion, A Vapor

Ice Cream is there anything better in summer than Ice Cream? (I've been posting about that a lot lately haven't I?) My two favorite flavors of ice cream are Pumpkin and Eggnog -- hmph do you see my problem? It's like they are an illusion, a vapor, they come out as "special editions" at Thanksgiving and Christmas and then poof nothing more for a whole year. But wait Ice Cream Source (yes can you believe it there is an online Ice Cream store!!) is sponsoring a contest at Moms..in a Blog, and Ice Cream Source apparently sells Eggnog ice cream all year round!!! Who knew?

So what? you say. Big deal. Why should you deserve to win some Eggnog ice cream lady? Well I'll tell you why. There is nothing more fabulous than Christmas in July! (well it may be August by the time this gets chosen, but you get the point). The taste, the texture, the smell. I quiver at the memories both of Christmas, real Eggnog, and well Eggnog Ice Cream (which I must say is far more appropriate eating in summer than at Christmas when every grocery store in America stocks it).

So if Moms in a Blog can do what the major grocery store chains in America can not, and provide me with Eggnog ice cream in summer...well they're just better (and nicer) than Santa.

Homemade Ice Cream? Me?

The idea of homemade ice cream is appealing - but then when I think about, sounds like an awful lot of work. (Although scooping really hard ice cream out of a container is hard work too sometimes!). I have in the past looked at making it on my own....but then the desire faded as I walked past the ice cream at the grocery store - or we went to Cold Stone Creamery. But check this baby out

made by Hamilton Beach, requiring no ice or salt, fully automatic, I think I could get into homemade ice cream. If you would like a chance to win this nifty little machine hop on over to from Dates to Diapers and read the post to find out how you may be able to snag this ultra cool ice cream machine. (And if I know you, and you win, I'll be expecting some ice cream!!)

I Scream, You Scream

Yummy, Ice Cream. There is not much more in the world for food that I love more. Popcorn and Pancakes come close depending on my tastebuds. I love Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream. However it is a tad pricey for the three of us to visit there if we have no coupons to redeem. Hubby usually takes me for my birthday to have a Pumpkin Pie In the Sky Ice Cream in a waffle bowl, which is my absolute favorite. Lately I've been purchasing low fat ice cream in order to save calories and well eat more (I know sort of defeats the purpose). We tried Blue Bunny's Bunny Tracks 1/2 fat ice cream -- that was a hit with everyone. I also got Edy's 1/2 fat Butter Pecan. It's okay not as good as the Blue Bunny one was, and I'm the only one eating it around here so far.

I found on a couple of blogs a new kind of ice cream called LaLoo's it's made from goat's milk, and sounds really interesting. There is only one small place here in Podunk that sells it, which happens to be right next door to the Breadsmith (yum), and down the street from Genius's orthodontist, so I just may have to check it out.

By the way did you know that the average number of licks to polish off a single scoop ice cream cone is approximately 50? Unless of course you're me, then it's probably 30 or so lol!
