Reading with the Mouse and Disney Digital Books

And I'm just not talking about Mickey Mouse, I'm talking about a computer mouse too!  Disney Digital Books provides a whole library of Disney books for readers of all levels, that will help keep (or learn!) a love for reading.

Amber has always been a reluctant reader. She reads well, but finding content that interests her is always a chore.  Disney Digital books however, has kept her busy the last couple of weeks for her required homeschool reading.  She has discovered the Jack Sparrow books and is reading longer than I require her, because she is liking them so much.

Language Learning and Networking Trip for Homeschoolers

Madrid Skyline (Image Via Wikipedia)Growing up in Canada I was fortunate to be able to learn a second language in school as soon as first grade.  Combine that with having both my parents immigrate from another country and learning another language at home, and I can get by (in most cases) in three languages.

One of the best things about homeschooling is the opportunities we have to travel.  Take for instance this spring.  We'll sail across the Atlantic Ocean and visit ports in Gibraltar, Portugal and Spain.  Talk about the ultimate field trip.

Miss Trimble's Trapdoor

A magic trapdoor that lets a student visit any time in history, makes learning US history fun!

Tyler Thompson may remind you of a child in your life.  A little distracted, not extremely popular, but wanting to do his best despite his self image.  A scraggly mutt is the least likely character you'd expect to help Tyler learn and remember US history, but Barnabas Bailey, who hangs out under the magical trapdoor in Miss Trimble's classroom, is indeed the teacher here.

The new book series, Miss Trimble's Trapdoor by Lori Jordan-Rice, is intended to help students learn basic US history and provide a positive message along with it.
The first book in the series Miss Trimble's Trapdoor, lays out the characters, setting and a brief introduction to the rest of the books to follow.

The second book is, Miss Trimble's Trapdoor: The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus.

This book really explains the life of Chirstpoher Columbus and his journeys in an engaging way, as well as showing perseverance as a character quality for living, while tying it back to Christopher Columbus and his life.

The books are stated to be for an audience of ages 9 -12, but I think that advanced readers as young as 6 could easily read these books.

If you're looking for a way to get your children or students more interested in basic US history, these books might be just what you're looking for.  Short chapters, large print and pictures help to make history come alive.  You can find out more about them at http://www.misstrimblestrapdoor.com/.

The Great Grammar Book Review

Mastering Grammar Usage and the Essentials of Composition

Do you or your student struggle when writing (or talking) with things like, when to use I or me?  Is it really okay to start a sentence with and or but?  And what about those tricky words that were slipped into the English language just to trip you up such as capitol and capital?

The Great Grammar Book by Marsha Sramek covers all of those topics and more!

When you open this book the more than 2,000 sentences will enable you to practice and master troublesome grammar subjects such as

  • possessives
  • reminders on when to use their, there, they're and other common errors
  • sentence fragments
  • and more
The author Marsha Sramek was a high school teacher and tutored students in college application processes.  She has since moved on to writing  textbooks.  The Great Grammar Book was tested in classrooms for four years.

If you have a student that struggles with grammar (like me!), and you want to re-enforce it as much as you can The Great Grammar Book provides over 100 integrated practice exercises.  Perhaps you need a refresher for your career, whether it be for writing, speaking or blogging, this book would be ideal for that!  Visit http://www.thegreatgrammarbook.com/ and you can download a free pdf diagnostic test to see where your grammar strengths and weaknesses lie.

The Great Grammar Book is available for $18.95 (or less if you purchase multiple copies).

I received a complimentary copy of The Great Grammar Book prior to writing this blog post.

Exploring the World of Chemistry and Physics

This book presents an exciting and intriguing tour through the realm ofchemistry as each chapter unfolds with facts and stories about thediscoveries and discoverers. Find out why pure gold is not used forjewelry or coins. Join Humphry Davy as he made many chemicaldiscoveries, and learn how they shortened his life. See how people inthe 1870s could jump over the top of the Washington Monument.

Exploring the World of Chemistry brings science to life and is awonderful learning tool with many illustrations, biographicalinformation, chapter tests, and an index for easy referencing.

Did you know that a feather and a lump of lead will fall at the samerate in a vacuum? Learn about the history of physics from Aristotle toGalileo to Isaac Newton to the latest advances. Discover how the lawsof motion and gravity affect everything from the normal activities ofeveryday life to launching rockets into space. Learn about the effectsof inertia firsthand during fun and informative experiments.

Exploring the World of Physics is a great tool for students ofall ages who want to have a deeper understanding of the important andinteresting ways that physics affects our lives and is complete withillustrations, chapter questions, and an index.

If I were to give a grade to these books, this home educator would give them an "A".

As a springboard to a full Chemistry or Physics course, these books are a fantastic introduction to the topics.  They are especially helpful for students who have difficulty understanding science.
Each topic is clearly explained and includes pictures, diagrams and formulas for extra study.

Chemistry and Physics can be a struggle for students who don't excel in Math, but it seems to me that John Hudson Tiner does a great job at taking these subjects and explaining them in a way that would allow a student to understand and master the concepts before going on to use a full course curriculum.

It is age appropriate for Middle School and up, and the questions at the end of each chapter reinforce learning.

The Exploring the World series science books are a wonderful "hands-off" way (no extensive lab work), to help the struggling science student.

At a price point of around $11.00 a book they also are affordable enough to add to your bookshelf.

I received complimentary copies of Exploring the World of Chemistry and Exporing the World of Physics from New Leaf Publishing Group in order to formulate my own opinion prior to writing this post.

Exploring the World of Biology

From Mushrooms to Complex Life Forms

The field of biology focuses on living things, from the smallest microscopic protozoa to the largest mammal. In this book you will read and explore the life of plants, insects, spiders and other arachnids, life in water, reptiles, birds, and mammals, highlighting God's amazing creation.

This book is an excellent science course for an upper elementary student.  It can also be used as a supplement for middle school or for high school biology.  The student learns about the biological kingdoms, in easy to understand language.  A question section is included at the end of each chapter to reinforce the concepts learned.
As there are no labs involved, it would not be sufficient for a stand alone course for middle or high school, however for difficult to grasp concepts this book may make it simpler for the student to understand.

I like how it is written from a creation standpoint, and it is done well not in a story book type of way.

The Explore questions at the beginning of each chapter and the Explore More section at its conclusion, engage the student to dig deeper and find out more on their own.

The pictures and illustrations are superb, unfortunately they are all black and white, color at least for some of them would enhance the book a bit more.

I would recommend this title, especially for students who struggle with science, as the text is easy to read.

Exploring the World of Biology by John Husdon Tiner is available at Amazon.com and Christian Book.com.  It is a Master Books title.  If you are interested in looking at some of its content, visit New Leaf Publishing Group and take a peek inside it.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of Exploring the World of Biology from New Leaf Publishing Group for the purpose of this review.

Giggles + Grammar = Giggles in the Middle

Grammar is one of those school subjects that kids either love or hate.  I would guess the majority of kids would vote the second.  I know mine would.  She has one of those love/hate relationships with it too.  She loves to write, but writing means knowing grammar rules well, which means practicing grammar, which is where the hate comes in, lol!

As you may have noticed from past blog posts, I am always on the lookout for new homeschooling material, especially for Language Arts.  I'm a strict teacher when it comes to grammar, I enforce at least a lesson (even if it is a short one) every day.  So when we finish a book and all its lessons, we go on to a new one.  Grammar is a tough subject to find engaging books for Amber.  Her learning style tends to be more on the "interest" side, so if I can find a book or curriculum that teaches to her likes, she is more apt to learn.  Books that explain concepts with stories, jokes or graphics appeal to her.  I have only found a couple of books like that in the past.

When Maupin House was looking for reviewers for their books, I went to their website to see what they had to offer.  I was immediately intrigued by Giggles in the Middle: Caught'ya! Grammar with a Giggle for Middle School (Jane Bell Kiester).  Grammar and the word Giggles in the same sentence?   I was sold before I even looked in the book, I was certain this would be something Amber would like.
I have been using Giggles in the Middle every day for the past couple of weeks with Amber, who is 13.  For the most part she has liked it, it still is grammar and I can't hide that lol!

The format of Giggles in the Middle is unique to any other book I have used so far.  The whole curriculum revolves around the story of group of students and Horribly Hard Middle School.  It is split up into three middle school years, but instructions include how to implement it if you are starting in 7th or 8th grade.  Each year includes 125 Caught'yas.

What's a Caught'ya exactly?  The Caught'ya method is an integrated way to teach language skills in context.  It allows you to teach grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary, paragraphing, sentence structure, homophones, misspelled words and more all within the context of a story.  After the introduction of the story is read, each Caught'ya is a 2 to 4 sentence paragraph continuing the story.  The hitch?  They are full of errors that the student needs to correct.  Something like this:

whats a caughtya exactly  the caughtya method is an integrated way to teach language skills in context  it allows you to teach gramar usage mechanics vocabulary paragraphing sentance structure homophones mispelled words and more all with in the context of a story.                                  -- Get it?

The neat thing is the teacher can change them according to what they feel is appropriate for the level of the students.  For the sake of the review I decided to leave the Caught'yas as they were formed in the book, and start from the beginning with the 6th grade year.  We have been doing 2-3 Caught'yas a day.  Although Amber is 8th grade age and doing a lot of high school work already, this is sufficiently challenging for her.  That surprised her some, and thrilled me.  It has made her much more conscious on how a sentence is to be structured.

Interspersed between the Caught'yas are writing ideas related to the story.  These are fun and make the student think a bit.  They encompass many different writing topics such as narratives and persuasive writing.

There is also a great deal of rich vocabulary introduced.  With most middle school material, I tend to find both the activities and vocabulary weak for accelerated students.  There is none of that in Giggles in the Middle.  Favorite Bill O'Reilly words like sagacious, odious and puerile are used, expanding the students word choice for writing and preparing them for college entrance tests.

I am planning to continue using this book until we are done with it, even if that extends into the next school year.  This is a good choice for those with middle school students who want a change from traditional workbooks with worksheets.  Using it without modifications is appropriate for accelerated students also.

To purchase Giggles in the Middle or to view other titles by Maupin House you can visit their website at www.MaupinHouse.com

I received a complimentary copy of Giggles in the Middle from Maupin House for thepurpose of this review.
