Language Learning and Networking Trip for Homeschoolers

Madrid Skyline (Image Via Wikipedia)Growing up in Canada I was fortunate to be able to learn a second language in school as soon as first grade.  Combine that with having both my parents immigrate from another country and learning another language at home, and I can get by (in most cases) in three languages.

One of the best things about homeschooling is the opportunities we have to travel.  Take for instance this spring.  We'll sail across the Atlantic Ocean and visit ports in Gibraltar, Portugal and Spain.  Talk about the ultimate field trip.

Your Children's Learning Styles

This week's Friday Heart of the Matter Meme is Your Children's Learning Styles

I am hard pressed to say what Genius learning style is. Most likely a mix of all the styles, visual/kinesthetic/writing, and by that I mean, if she can get down and dirty with it, she'll learn. We have been thoroughly enjoying the World Studies Social Studies curriculum put out by Bob Jones University Press. We have made our way up to Chapter 5 now, having covered the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation and Mongol Empire. Each unit chapter has "extras" to do with the student to more fully immerse them in the experience. For example the Reformation -- Genius had to imagine she was a child in a German town at the time that Martin Luther's 95 Theses was distributed and write a letter to her cousin explaining the situation at hand. We baked "Apfel Kuechen" (Apple Cake), a traditional German dish and watched the movie Luther starring Joseph Fiennes, all of which immersed her more into the culture and setting of the subject at hand. This really excelled her learning and enjoyment of it.

We are looking forward to studying more using this approach to learn about the history and culture of the people around us!

Conquering Clutter

Today's Heart of the Matter Friday Meme is "Conquering Clutter".

Before we homeschooled and I had more time during the day to watch some television one of my favorite tv shows was Clean Sweep. While the rooms in my home have never looked like the ones they feature, I have employed a couple of tips that they use to conquer the clutter in my home.

#1 -Tackle one room at a time - I think we often want to have everything done at once. That is our nature. Or we do nothing because the thought of going through all of our stuff is just overwhelming. I pick one room once a month to go through and declutter. That way I go through our home twice a year and use the "trash, giveaway, find a spot for it, keep" method.

#2 - In and out - I have an "in an out" rule in our home. For everything that comes in that is new, that is not replacing a broken, old, lost or outgrown item, one thing goes out. If Genius purchases a new video game, an old one must be given away or sent to the resale shop. If I purchase her some new clothes just because, the same applies with an item she hardly wears even though it still fits her. If I purchase a kitchen gadget I just have to have, another less used one, needs to be donated. This cuts down on the growing clutter, and makes us more careful about our purchases. If there is nothing that we are willing to part with at the moment, we are less likely to buy new things, and thus be better stewards of the paycheck God has blessed us with.

This third strategy is one my Dad enforced while I was growing up, and it worked!

#3 - Everything has a place and there is a place for everything - This rule applies more to Genius than anyone else in our home, as Hubby and myself are fairly responsible at putting things back where they belong. It was a tough love, and hard task to do, but Genius is somewhat of a neat freak now. By using the above rule she learned quickly that cleaning up her possessions or things that she had used from others that were not put away, was a responsibility better not left undone. In our home, she is given two warnings to put her things where they belong when she is finished using them. After she has been told twice, and the items in question are still lying around, they are put in a bag and given or thrown away. Not just for a little while, but permanently. She only had to lose a couple of favorite things once, and now is a prompt "cleaner upper" when asked, since she knows we will follow through with the decision.

I am looking forward to reading other ways that homeschoolers conquer the clutter in their home, come along and read with me at Heart of the Matter Online, or post on your blog, and link back there, so I can check out your methods too!

What we are using this year!

I'm a little late in posting - but this week's Heart of the Matter Meme is the curriculum we are using right now.

So here we go;

For Math right now we are using Math Smarts 7 -- a Canadian workbook that we picked up while visiting family in January. We also picked up the Math Smarts 8 for when we are finished that -- as well as Teaching Textbooks Algebra I to finish off the year.

In Language Arts we are using The Write Stuff Adventure, Sequential Spelling, Painless Grammar and another Canadian Workbook; English Smarts 7 -- We will be starting on a reading unit using the book Frindle next week. We already finished reading Do Hard Things.

In Social Studies, we're using World Studies by BJU. We are also reading through Tim Echols book Real Citizenship.

In Science we are using A Reason for Science Level G.

So far we are very impressed with the World Studies curriculum, and while there is nothing wrong with the science one, we are pretty sure we'll take a different one for next year, it's a little too simple for Genius.

Check out Heart of the Matter for the Meme of the Week...to see what other families are using for their curriculum this year.

Virtual Homeschool Conference

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a homeschooling conference, right at my own church in April. We had not even started homeschooling yet, but the wealth of information I received, and the speakers so encouraged our decision, and I was so excited to start.

We have now started on our fourth week of school, and have had a few ups and downs, but are committed to our decision, and feel that it is definitely the right thing for our family.

Heart of the Matter is having their own conference, and no matter where you reside, as long as you have an internet connection (and I assume you do if you're reading this!), you can attend. From all the preview things I have seen, it's going to be one good, encouraging and positive time for all that attend.

They are also generously giving away a few free tickets to the conference check out how you can enter at Heart of the Matter.

What Hasn't Worked For Me

This is the first year in our homeschooling adventure, and not wanting Genius's brain to resemble oatmeal mush by the time the end of August rolled around, we let her have one month of vacation before we started schooling. Having never done this before, I had high expectations of both myself and her. I was so organized, figuring out how many pages a day we would need to cover to finish the text book within the allotted time.

Ha ha only three weeks into this, and I'm laughing at myself. In not one of our books have we reached the pages "we should have been" at, and some of the curriculum I purchased that I had to have in my daily schedule have not even been opened.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not upset or disappointed by this apparent revelation, however, SCHEDULING did not work for me. We simply take the time to do what comes next in the book, and if we cover less than I anticipated that's okay. If we cover more (not likely hee hee), that's okay too! My main goal was to make sure Genius understood the concepts being taught, and some are taking a little longer than others.

So I applaud you homeschoolers that can make a schedule and stick to it, because in reality that is how I have accomplished most tasks that I have needed to get done. Alas, I need to learn to be more flexible. It's an ingrain thought pattern, from years of a traditional school setting, that I'm sure will slowly become a distant memory (at least I hope so!).

If you would like to read more revelations of what did not work for homeshooling families around the globe check out The Heart of the Matter for their Friday Meme.
