The Cradle - Book Club Read - Giveaway
Hi readers – I recently was introduced to the paperback edition of the book "The Cradle" by Patrick Somerville, and I thought I would let you know about it - especially if you are part of a book club.
Early one summer morning, Matthew Bishop kisses his still-sleeping wife Marissa, gets dressed and eases his truck through Milwaukee, bound for the highway. His wife, pregnant with their first child, has asked him to find the antique cradle taken years before by her mother Caroline when she abandoned Marissa, never to contact her daughter again. Soon to be a mother herself, Marissa now dreams of nothing else but bringing her baby home to the cradle she herself slept in. His wife does not know-does not want to know-where her mother lives, but Matt has an address for Caroline's sister near by and with any luck, he will be home in time for dinner.
Publisher: Back Bay Books
List Price: $13.99/$16.99
Publish Date: 4/12/2010
Only as Matt tries to track down his wife's mother, he discovers that Caroline, upon leaving Marissa, has led a life increasingly plagued by impulse and irrationality, a mysterious life that grows more inexplicable with each new lead Matt gains, and door he enters. As hours turn into days and Caroline's trail takes Matt from Wisconsin to Minnesota, Illinois, and beyond in search of the cradle, Matt makes a discovery that will forever change Marissa's life, and faces a decision that will challenge everything he has ever known.
Elegant and astonishing, Patrick Somerville tells the story of one man's journey into the heart of marriage, parenthood, and what it means to be a family. Confirming the arrival of an exuberantly talented new writer, THE CRADLE is an uniquely imaginative debut novel that radiates with wisdom and wonder.
An obviously heart-wrenching store, told from a male's point of view, should definitely cause much discussion among a book club!
As with a lot of the books that are suitable for Book Clubs and published under Hachette Book Group, a Reading Group Guide for The Cradle is available. This helps those of us who are anxious to share our insights and questions with others, but kind of flail when it comes to where to start or what to ask.
Three readers will win a copy of The Cradle.
To enter the giveaway let me know what book you've read that would be good to read as a selection for a book club.

The Confident Woman by Joyce Meyer would be good for a book club (well if the members where women and didn't mind a mildly christian book)
Thanks for the chance to read this book.

Right now I am reading "So Brave, Young and Handsome," and I'm loving it. I really enjoy this author's writing style. "The Cradle" looks like a good read as well!

I AGREE LOVE IN MID-AIR BY KIM WRIGHT IS THE PERFECT BOOK
I recently read "Irreplaceable" by Stephen Lovely. It deals with the aftermath of organ donation (from both the donor's family and the recipient's point of view), so I think it would generate lots of conversation -- which is what makes a great book club read, IMHO!
The Male Brain by Louann Brizendine.
I'm sure The Help is being discussed in many a book club! Thanks!
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult was really good. Thank you!

I just finished Push by Sapphire--if it weren't for the offensive language that book would be great for a book club. It is a wonderful story of a girl who rises above the trauma, abuse, and neglect of her early childhood. The language is necessary to tell this particular story, but wow, it is HARSH!
