The Rose Legacy: Book 1 in Diamond of the Rockies

The Rose Legacy - by Kristen Heitzmann

Carina DiGratia always thought she would marry long time family friend Flavio, until he breaches her trust with none other than her sister.

She decides to punish him by picking up her roots in Sonoma, and moving to Crystal, Colorado which the advertisements state is the "Diamond of the Rockies".  Carina was leaving a life of privilege behind, and without realizing, moving to a mining town where women only worked in one profession.

Thinking Flavio will soon come after her and apologize, Carina digs her heels in and stays in Crystal.  She haggles with Berkley Beck, the attorney that is settling her land claim, into making her his assistant and spends her evenings in Mae's boarding house.

While exploring the abandoned mining town up the gulch, she comes across The Rose Legacy, a mine that has a legend behind it.  The mysterious and aggravating freighter, Quillan Shepherd, shares his history with the mine, and the storm brewing among the residents of Crystal is tied to The Rose Legacy as well. The story unfolds with Carina, Quillan, and Berkley being the center characters.  Is Carina playing both men, or is it a matter of her not knowing who to trust?

That is pretty much the short version of the story without giving out too many specifics.  I did enjoy the writing in this book, although I thought it rather long, and could possibly have still contained the whole story in fewer pages.  My guess is that, Kristen Heitzmann is setting up the characters and story lines of the future books in the series and so we have a lot of characters that are featured in The Rose Legacy that only play minor parts in this volume but are detailed quite descriptively.

Those that enjoy Historical American Fiction will like reading this book of a young Italian immigrant making her own way in a mining town of Colorado.

I am giving away my copy of The Rose Legacy to one reader of my blog.

I suppose Women In The Wild West if that is a category. I suppose that specific type of historical fiction appeals to me--like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane etc.
